Global Families examines the various challenges and opportunities presented to families by the globalization of politics, economics, culture, and other social systems.  The globalization of politics, economics, culture, and other social systems are creating challenges and opportunities for families throughout the world.  Yet, those who study families are often unfamiliar with the theories and research on globalization.  Global Families provides an introduction to the interdisciplinary field of globalization, and then examines the ways in which globalization impinges on families throughout the world in four major areas: demographic transitions, transnational employment, international violence, and world-wide culture.  The book concludes with a discussion of supra-national policies and other efforts to position families in this global landscape.

  • Presents the most current research on families and globalization from across a range of disciplines.
  • Also includes the "lived experiences" of individuals-- direct quotes from research, media, and other sources where familes share their own accounts.
  • Examines the effects of globalization on families in four major areas:

1. demographic transitions

2. transnational employment

3. international violence

4. world-wide culture

  • Uses a variety of theoreticals frameworks and perspectives, including postmodernist and feminist.
  • Each chapter includes an essay by a leading scholar, activitist, or policy expert.
  • Provocative questions at the end of each chapter encourage students to think critically about globalization and families.
  • Part of "Families in the 21st Century", an Allyn & Bacon series of short texts and research monographs that focus on critical issues facing families today.
