Lifespan Development offers strong applications, learning objectives, and integrated assessment.

Students who want to know "What does current research say?" and "Why is this important?" will appreciate both the applied nature of this text and the clarity and rigor of the authors' presentation of current research.  An exceptional pedagogical package that ties the textbook to online MyDevelopmentLab study tools complements the student-centered approach of the book and offers students the benefit of frequent self-assessment.

Strong emphasis on applications balanced with to-the-point coverage of theory and research:  A number of special features make the study of human development relevant not just for psychologists but also for students in the many other fields in which this information is needed, including nursing, medicine, social work, education and home economics. For example:

  • A special section, Research Report, provides detailed accounts of specific research studies, while “Questions for Critical Analysis” appear at the end of the feature to help students assess the research and make connections between the research study and their daily lives.
  • The Real World essays explore practical applications of developmental theory and research, in such areas as parenting, teaching, care giving, aging, and working.
  • No Easy Answers sections discuss the pros and cons of various practical problems for which psychology does not have simple, formulaic answers, such as how to curb youth violence. The authors’ hope is that, by reading these discussions, students will become more sensitive to the complexity of human development and more tolerant of the ambiguities inherent in the behavioral and social sciences.
  • Policy Questions at the end of each Part illustrate how the findings of developmental research may be used to influence policy changes in the real world. This feature also offers students and instructors an excellent starting point for group discussions or research projects.

Frequent opportunities for self-assessment: The authors believe that one of the keys to promoting better student learning is giving students the tools to assess their progress continuously, which also discourages memorization.  Lifespan Development promotes ongoing self-assessment in several ways:

  • Critical Thinkng… questions appear at the end of each major section of the chapter, to encourage students to stop and process information before continuing to the next part of the chapter.
  • Practice Tests, found after each chapter summary, offer students an immediate opportunity for more comprehensive review.
  • MyDevelopmentLab Study Plan at the end of each chapter prompts students to go online to create their own Study Plan which links them to additional multimedia resources that will help them shore up weak areas in their knowledge base.
  • Grade Aid, more than just a Study Guide, the Grade Aid guides students through a multi-step active-reading process, prepping them before they read, offering demonstrations, activities and exercises they can use as they read, providing practice tests after they read, and, finally, helping them expand their knowledge through suggested web links when they’ve finished.

Student-centered pedagogy: Each chapter features an array of learning aids, including:

  • Chapter Outlines at the beginning of each chapter;
  • Learning Objectives, in question format, tied to each major section of the chapter;
  • Critical-Thinking questions at the end of each major chapter section;
  • Marginal Glossary in the margins that define boldfaced terms in the text;
  • Key Terms list at the end of the chapter;
  • Chapter Summaries tied to Learning Objectives that help students focus their study of development.

Learning Objectives. Each chapter has been framed around Learning Objective questions to help students focus on the key takeaways for each chapter. Every major section of the text now begins with a corresponding, numbered Learning Objective. To help the student achieve these Learning Objectives, end of chapter summaries, the MyDevelopmentLab Study Plan feature, and the Grade Aid Study Guide are all also organized around these numbered Learning Objectives. In addition, the Instructor’s Manual and Test Bank now correspond to these Learning Objectives, allowing you to assess your students’ knowledge of key educational objectives.

MyDevelopmentLab Study Plan. At the end of each chapter, the MyDevelopmentLab Study Plan prompts students to go online to take a pre-test that generates a customized Study Plan for them that links them to additional multimedia resources that will help them shore up weak areas in their knowledge base. The in-text feature lists specific assets students will find when they go into MyDevelopmentLab.
