Becoming a Teacher, Seventh Edition, takes a straightforward look at what it means to be a professional teacher in today's rapidly changing, high-stakes environment of education.
Building upon a strong “mentoring” message that has long been the tradition of Becoming a Teacher, the Seventh Edition helps students make difficult decisions about their teaching future by fostering an awareness of the realities of teaching in America today. This no-nonsense approach provides students with the tools and information necessary to answer the questions, “What does it take to succeed as a teacher today?” and “Do I want to teach?” Along the way, the authors provide practical perspectives for meeting the challenges of teaching. Organized into four parts, the book addresses both practical and foundational topics to give readers a well-rounded view of the teaching profession.
The Tenth Edition maintains the lucid writing style for which the author is renowned, combined with a clear emphasis on educational psychology's practical relevance. This edition provides an especially helpful new chapter on Engaged Learning: Cooperation and Community, recognizing the challenges educators face in the next decade to keep all students connected to learning and all schools safe and compassionate.
The most applied text on the market, this text is replete with examples, lesson segments, case studies, and practical ideas from experienced teachers. In addition, at the end of the text is a new Handbook for Successful Teaching and Lifelong Learning, which has four sections:
The four sections of this Handbook for Successful Teaching and Lifelong Learning will give you even more tools for passing your licensing test, getting a job, and teaching well, no matter what surprises come your way.
For the first time, this text will appear in a “MyLabSchool Edition,” so every copy will include an access code to a special version of Allyn and Bacon’s hugely popular MyLabSchool, a collection of web-based resources for teacher candidates. This special site will contain the following:
The Eighth Edition of this popular text from renowned educational psychologist Robert Slavin translates theory into practices that teachers can use in their classrooms with a further inquiry into the concept of intentionality and a thorough integration of standards.
This edition maintains its in-depth, practical coverage with a focus on the intentional teacher by presenting up-to-the-minute research that a reflective, intentional teacher can apply. An “intentional teacher,” according to Slavin, is one who constantly reflects on his or her practice and makes instructional decisions based on a clear conception of how these practices affect students. To help readers become “intentional teachers,” the author offers a set of questions to guide them and models best practices through classroom examples.
Firmly rooted in research, up-to-date theory, and classroom-tested applications, Educational Psychology prepares teachers as no other text does. It teaches them to think about how students develop and learn, to make decisions before and during instruction, and to consider what constitutes evidence that their students are learning and succeeding.
This edition includes a new focus on reflection, new cases, sections on brain research, programs for language minority students, technology, No Child Left Behind, and after school and summer school programs. It contains new critiques of assessment and accountability strategies and a substantially updated treatment of programming for students with special needs.
The Emerging Trends Update Edition package still contains the highly acclaimed 8th edition of Bob Slavin’s Educational Psychology: Theory and Practice. In addition to the main text, every student copy comes packaged with an additional chapter of material that highlights the latest issues and trends in the field of educational psychology including NCLB, accountability, the achievement gap, and brain research. Also included: MyLabSchool activities linked to every chapter of the text, including the new Ch. 15, Current Issues and Emerging Trends.
CHAPTER 15, included in this updated edition, provides up-to-the-minute information about the effects of No Child Left Behind, including the changing roles of federal and state governments and local districts in U.S. public education; the problems with high-pressure, high-stakes "accountability" measures; and the persistence of the achievement gap based on race and class despite legislation specifically intended to correct this.
The Eighth Edition of this popular text from renowned educational psychologist Robert Slavin translates theory into practices that teachers can use in their classrooms with a further inquiry into the concept of intentionality and a thorough integration of standards.
This edition continues to have in-depth, practical coverage with a focus on the intentional teacher by presenting up-to-the-minute research that a reflective, intentional teacher can apply.
Keeping pace with current issues and professional requirements, such as standards and teacher certification, this classic text offers solid coverage of the foundations of education.
This best-selling text by respected authorities in their fields continues to develop successful teachers by providing a broad introduction to the foundations of education through current discussions of theory and practice. The book offers a thorough overview of the historical, legal, philosophical, social, and practical aspects of American education. The Fourteenth Edition includes a new chapter on technology and features dedicated to classroom case studies, INTASC standards, and teacher certification.
With Making a Difference as its central theme, the Sixth Edition of this bestselling text recognizes that more than ever before, educators have the opportunity and ability to make a real difference in the educational experiences of their students with disabilities.
Students and teachers have long relied on this comprehensive overview of the field of special education and the ways in which all teachers can help students with special needs to succeed in school and reach their full potential. The text is brimming with evidence-based practices, ready-to-use teaching tips, and up-to-the minute information about technology applications and contemporary inclusive practices–all tools that teachers can use with students of all abilities, from those who struggle to the most gifted.
The text uses authentic stories from real people, current news events, and examples from contemporary popular culture to examine the positive effects of 30 years of IDEA, 15 years of ADA, and many years of social activism on the lives of individuals with disabilities, their families, and the educators and professionals who work with them.
While recognizing that becoming a teacher is hard work, this book also celebrates teaching as a satisfying journey filled with joy, happiness, laughter, and personal reward. Each chapter begins with the real-world perspective from a teacher that enhances the content of that chapter. All text content anticipates what teacher education candidates will need to know and be able to do on state licensure tests, keeping INTASC standards close at hand as a guide for readers and instructors.

In the second edition of Marilyn Friend’s introductory special education text, the emphasis is on contemporary concepts and evidence-based practices that prepare teachers for their evolving role in the education and well-being of students with disabilities and other special needs.
Informed by her years of experience working with students with disabilities and their teachers, this trusted author combines research-informed concepts and skills with practical information for educators working in this challenging age of high standards and accountability, curriculum access, inclusive practices, professional collaboration, student diversity, and legislative change. The second edition fully reflects NCLB and IDEA 2004 legislation and regulations so that readers understand the most recent expectations for professional educators and their students. Throughout the book, the author grounds the discussion in the realities of today’s classrooms in a way that is concrete and compelling to future teachers. The text strikes a careful balance between the immediate concerns of novice educators with the broader human needs and experiences of students with exceptionalities and their families.
Written by teachers for teachers, this text offers a clear and current look at the range of educational technologies and how teachers can effectively use technology to enhance learning.
Beginning with a foundation in learning theory and instructional design that helps position educational technology within the framework of teaching and learning, this text explores the current and emerging technologies available to teachers. Using practical applications, examples from the classroom, and an array of reflection activities, the text offers students the opportunity to fully explore and apply technologies as tools to enhance teaching and learning. This edition includes a new culminating chapter focusing on technology standards and how these standards and technology impact the teaching profession. Faculty will find a full range of in-text activities including reviews, group, critical thinking, and hands-on experiences as well as marginal references to the robust companion website and related activities available there including research, reviews, videos, and podcasts.
