Sentence Dynamics empowers students to overcome roadblocks to correct writing with lucid definitions of sentence elements and an abundance of examples and exercises.
This student-friendly worktext provides positive reinforcement by giving examples of standard usage. Starting with simple subject-verb forms, each chapter adds new elements—modifiers, phrases, and clauses. The final chapter on the paragraph explains keeping a journal, generating ideas through clustering diagrams, outlining, and using topic sentences. This element-building approach enables students to progressively develop their grammar skills.
- Skill-combining tests. Tests include ten “combined skills” tests in the Appendix and eight “editing practice” paragraphs.
- New visual response writing. Each chapter concludes with a thought-provoking photograph and writing prompt.
- New pre-test and post test. An in-text pre-test diagnoses students’ grammar skills prior to chapter reading, and a post-test in the Instructor’s Manual tests the student’s aptitude upon completion of the chapter.
- Refreshed examples and readings. New examples and readings on topics of high interest and of an appropriate reading level replace overly familiar or outdated topics.
- Greater focus on troublesome topics. Coverage of the most challenging topics (adjectives and adverbs, linking verbs, and various rules about commas) was enhanced with greater detail and more exercises.
