A comprehensive review of feminist scholarship in the social sciences, showing how gender operates in every aspect of society, and how the experiences of both men and women are created through social institutions.
- Author Margaret Andersen is the former editor of Gender & Society, the recipient of the Sociologists for Women in Society Feminist Lecturer Award, and a leading scholar and teacher.
- The text is interdisciplinary in its coverage, yet grounded in sociological theory and research.
- Integrates discussions of race, class, and sexuality to show how gender is not experienced in isolation.
- The opening chapters introduce students to the underlying sociological framework and show how research on women and women’s studies as a field developed from the feminist movement.
- Exceptional student pedagogy includes end-of-chapter key terms, discussion questions, suggested readings, and a glossary.
- Organization of text:
- Part I, “Studying Women,” introduces students to the study of gender as it is rooted in feminist analysis. This section includes discussion of men’s studies and its connection to feminist scholarship.
- Part II, “Gender, Culture, and Sex,” focuses on the social construction of gender and the representation of gender in culture, particularly in the media.
- Part III, “Gender and Social Institutions” examines the institutional structures of work, family, health, religion, criminal justice, education, and politics.
- Part IV, “Gender and Social Change” introduces student to feminist theory and its link to the women’s movement.
- Three new boxed features, found in every chapter (except Ch. 1), highlight key themes of the text: research, the media, and studies about men. The boxes are:
A Focus on Research , in which a new empirical research study, appropriate to the chapter subject, is described.- Example (Chapter 6): a discussion of “opting out”—that is, are well-educated, middle-class women dropping out of the labor market to raise children? The media claim this is a strong trend, but is it? This box feature examines new sociological research on this topic.
Media Matters , in which an empirical study examining some aspect of the media related to the chapter topic is presented-
Example(Chapter 9): a box featuring new research on violent images of rape on the Internet. This box also shows how Asian women are overrepresented in pornographic web sites.
-
What about Men? , a box which features research examining some aspect of men’s lives that is related to the chapter topic.- Example(Chapter 4): a box on the peer socialization of young boys in which homophobic insults reinforce social norms of masculinity
- New design - a new design, including more photographs, creates an open feel which is easier for students to read.
- Throughout the new edition, new research has been incorporated, examples revised to appeal to contemporary students, and figures and empirical facts updated to reflect the most current information. In addition to the updating and incorporation of new research, here are some of the highlights of individual chapters:

Brief Description
"This book is so well done it makes Margaret L. Anderson an authority in Women’s Studies. It is logically structured, thorough in its discussion and inclusive of the most important themes in the contemporary literature. Anderson writes in a relaxed, engaging style that is highly readable yet is informative and well-researched."
Jeff Torlina
Utah Valley State College
"The main reason I adopted Andersen's text is because of her conceptualization of race, class, and gender as interlocking systems of power and privilege."
"I see Andersen’s text as a comprehensive introduction to feminist scholarship and research. It is extremely well written, current, empirically grounded, and, most importantly, very easy to read and exciting."
Daphne S. Cain
Louisiana State University
"I use this text because it covers a broad range of social institutions, includes good demographic information and reader-friendly charts, graphs, etc. I also like that the text introduces higher-level concepts (like the dominance of scientific epistemology, the role of ideology, etc.) in a way that is accessible to lower division students."
Joy C. Honea
Montana State University-Billings
"The overall strength of this text is its use of the socioogical perspective and the wide range of topics covered that relate to women/families."
Sharon K. Araji
University of Alaska-Anchorage
"I adopted this text primarily because of its specific focus on the sociological investigation and theoretical framing of women's issues (as opposed to a treatment of gender in general)."
Susan L. Wortmann
University of Nebraska-Lincoln

For classes involving introductory Research or Experimental Methods.
This successful introduction to behavioral research methods provides step-by-step guidance through the processes of planning an empirical study, analyzing and interpreting data, and reporting findings and conclusions.
When Beginning Behavioral Research was created, it was conceived as an undergraduate text for students, who, as part of a course in research methods, are required to plan an empirical study, to analyze and interpret the data, and to present their findings and conclusions in a written report. With this in mind, however, through their years in the field the authors found that all research methods are limited in some ways, and therefore it is essential not to foreclose on the use of tools and techniques that enable the study of phenomena from more than one vantage point. By examining different scientific methods, theories, and units of analysis - rather than any single one - the authors are able to give students a broad base of scientific thinking that will, they believe, encourage the idea that each generation of researchers builds on the important findings of previous researchers in a chain of discovery and understanding.
For undergraduate courses in Behavior Modification or Behavior Therapy
This book presents a comprehensive, practical presentation of both the principles of behavior modification and guidelines for their application.
Throughout their separate experiences in teaching behavior modification over the past 39 years, both Garry Martin and Joseph Pear’s goals have remained the same: to teach people about the principles of behavior modification and how to apply them effectively to their everyday concerns — from helping children learn life’s necessary skills to solving some of their own personal behavior problems. Through eight editions their text has remained successful and effective because it addresses the needs of two central audiences: college and university students taking courses in behavior modification and its related areas; and students or practitioners of various helping professions (such as clinical psychology, counseling, medicine, etc.) who are concerned directly with enhancing various forms of behavioral development. Assuming no prior knowledge of behavior modification or psychology, this text facilitates understanding of the principles of behavior modification and helps readers to successfully implement behavior modification programs.

For Urban Sociology, Urban Political Economy, Urban Anthropology, and Urban Studies courses taught out of the sociology, political science and urban studies departments.
Cities and Urban Life, authored by two of the best-known textbook writers in the field, provides a comprehensive introduction to urban sociology, urban anthropology, and urban studies courses. Primarily sociological in approach, this book incorporates historical, social, psychological, geographical, and anthropological insights. While strong in the classical urban sociology, it also gives extensive attention to the "new" political economy approach to urban studies. Also, the authors use global cities as case studies for more relevance to students.
Praised for the clarity of its writing, careful research, and distinctive theme — that urban politics in the United States has evolved as a dynamic interaction among governmental power, private actors, and a politics of identity — the Sixth Edition of this text brings city politics of the global era into sharp focus by tracing the continuous development of urban America from the nation’s founding to the present.
The psychology of human memory and cognition is fascinating, dealing with questions and ideas that are inherently interesting, such as how we think, reason, remember, and use language. This text is directed primarily toward undergraduate students at junior and senior level. Using a first person narrative, posing direct questions to the reader, and balancing classic research with cutting edge topics, the author draws in the reader and conveys the excitement of the field.
The fourth edition thoroughly covers the foundation areas in cognition. Reflecting the increasing use of new technologies to study memory and cognition, Ashcraft continues to integrate sections on neurosciences withing individual chapter topics. A major section in the introductory chapters provides background and information on neurons and the brain, so even students without formal coursework on the biological bases of congnition will be prepared for the cognitive neuroscience coverage in the text.
Other important new developments also examined in the new edition include: false memory research, new research on working memory and individual differences, new strides in online investigations of comprehension and reading, and new challenges to the classic research in heurstics in decision-making.
For undergraduate courses of beginning graduate courses in Introductory Cognitive Psychology.
Using a unique question-and-answer format, this text comprehensively addresses many of the overarching questions that confront and motivate today's cognitive scientists.
When Daniel Willingham first approached the prospect of creating his own cognitive psychology text, he did so with the knowledge that his years of teaching experience had brought him: while many texts were relatively adequate in coverage, his students never liked them. Usually underexposed to social sciences in pre-college courses, he found his students often struggled with understanding how and why cognitive psychologists approach the problems that they do. Here, by using a unique question-and-answer format, he is able to start with questions frequently asked by students, relate those to questions cognitive scientists ask in their own research, present clear answers, and frame those answers in an interesting, lively, and comprehensive coverage of the core material. Through this accessible narrative style, Willingham shows the logical connections between each section and, by means of several new pedagogical features, encourages students to apply what they have learned in their daily lives.
One of the top sellers in the field, Cognitive Psychology is well-written, humorous, and remains the most comprehensive and balanced text in the area of undergraduate cognition. MacLin and MacLin, inheriting the textbook from the late Robert L. Solso, boldly revised and reorganized the Eighth Edition to reflect emerging trends in the field, while retaining the strengths that made it one of the most popular texts among students and professors. The text features a sequential model of human cognition from sensation to perception, to attention, to memory, to higher-order cognition, and features new cutting-edge coverage of consciousness, cognitive neuroscience, memory and forgetting, and evolutionary psychology.
For courses in Cognitive Psychology, Cognitive Neuroscience, Learning and Memory, Philosophy of Mind, and Philosophy of Psychology.
The first book that fully integrates information about the brain and neural processing into the standard curriculum in cognitive psychology.
Based on a need for a text that could accurately, productively, and seamlessly integrate information on both the brain and neural processing, Edward E. Smith (Columbia University) and Stephen M. Kosslyn (Harvard University) created Cognitive Psychology: Mind and Brain 1.e. Without question, the study of cognition has progressed enormously over the past decade. Most importantly, much of the recent progress in cognitive studies has come from the advent of cognitive neuroscience, which uses neuroscientific methods and data to address psychological issues. However, throughout years of academic teaching, the authors came to realize that no currently available book was able to summarize and make accessible the major findings, theories, and research the field had produced. Now, in this text's first edition, these issues have been addressed. Using findings in neuroscience to illuminate and motivate key distinctions in cognitive psychology, the authors have written a cognitive psychology book that is informed by neuroscience - the first of its kind and one poised to set a new standard in undergraduate cognitive studies.
A comprehensive collection of primary documents for students of early American and Atlantic history, Colonial North America and the Atlantic World gives voice to the men and women–Amerindian, African, and European–who together forged a new world.
These compelling narratives address the major themes of early modern colonialism from the perspective of the people who lived at the time: Spanish priests and English farmers, Indian diplomats and Dutch governors, French explorers and African abolitionists. Evoking the remarkable complexity created by the bridging of the Atlantic Ocean, Colonial North America and the Atlantic World suggests that the challenges of globalization–and the growing reality of American diversity–are among the most important legacies of the colonial world.
For freshman/sophomore-level courses in Comparative Politics, World Politics, as well as Introduction to Politics with a comparative focus.
Written in aclear, jargon-free style, Comparative Politics emphasizes political institutions and behavior–rather than on abstract conceptual frameworks. This approach makes the text more accessible to introductory students than most other texts on comparative politics. It features both a cross-national approach which focuses helping students develop develop a comparative understanding of the types of institutions (e.g., constitutions, executives, legislatures, political parties, etc.)–as well as a country-by-country approach that examines those institutions within the contexts of eight different countries. This approach allows students to develop the ability to look how all the “pieces” fit together in various countries.
Contextualized within a broader philosophical and historical context, the carefully chosen and excerpted selections in this popular reader introduce students to the core debates about the causes and the future of war and peace. Through the precision of its approach and attention to new issues, this reader challenges conventional wisdom and encourages more critical examination of the political, economic, social, and military factors that underlie political violence.

This highly accessible book provides a basic introduction to the nature of research questions and methods of empirical research in political science. It describes the cooperative process, as well as the logic of empirical measurement and analysis of observations, in the conception and pursuit of a research project. Emphasizing the design of interesting research questions and basic problems of measurement and data analysis, the book relies more on intuitive understanding than on formal development.
W. Phillips Shively wrote this book in 1970, when he was an assistant professor at Yale University. In teaching a number of sections of Introduction to Research to undergraduates there, he had found that the students benefited from an introduction that emphasized the internal logic of research methods and the collective, cooperative nature of the research process. He could not find a book that presented things in this way at a sufficiently elementary level to be readily accessible by undergraduates. And so he wrote The Craft of Political Research.
