ActiveBooks are designed with student success in mind. A unique combination of print and electronic materials, ActiveBooks provide a true active learning experience. Studies show that assessment opportunities immediately after reading increase student comprehension and understanding. ActiveBooks have built in self-assessment at the end of every main heading in the book as well as end of chapter practice tests. Combined with the individualized study plan found in MySpeechLab, these assessments provide a wide range of focused learning opportunities for students.

ActiveBooks have two components—the printed workbook and MySpeechLab, which contains a full, electronic version of the textbook including media assets and active assessments. The print component is the narrative of the textbook. There are in-text references that direct students to the MySpeechLab E-Book to view the material from the text. Students are also directed, via icons in the workbook, to complete “watch” or “explore” activities that represent the most important concepts in the section, and then answer questions to illustrate their understanding. At the end of the main sections, students are directed to complete a Quick Review, a self test consisting of six to eight questions, and two critical thinking questions about the material they have just read. With ActiveBooks, students always have access to the full E-Book version of the textbook as well as all the multimedia assets and assessments contained in MySpeechLab.

MySpeechLab (www.myspeechlab.com) is a state-of-the-art, interactive and instructive online solution for introductory public speaking courses. MySpeechLab combines multimedia, video, activities, speech preparation tools, research support, tests, and quizzes to make teaching and learning fun! An access code to MySpeechLab comes with every new copy of this ActiveBook Edition.

Grice & Skinner, Mastering Public Speaking 6e, in brief:

Mastering Public Speaking equips students with a firm grounding in the “hows” and “whys” of public speaking by providing an ideal balance of theory and skills while placing important emphases on critiquing, ethics, and critical thinking. Written in a casual, lively style and clearly organized, this sixth retains its popular and distinctive emphasis on the ethical contract between speaker and listener and on the value of critiquing speeches to improve one's own skills. Students learn how to think critically as they choose speech topics, conduct research, organize content, select language, manage nervousness, and deliver speeches.

See Grice & Skinner’s Mastering Public Speaking 6e for a complete description of the text.

  • Strong coverage of ethics throughout:
    • The first public speaking book to include a full chapter on ethics (Ch. 2) continues to stress to students the importance of being ethical speakers and listeners.
    • In-chapter discussions of ethical issues throughout the book stress to students how ethics is a part of the entire public speaking process.
  • Emphasis on speech criticism:
    • Step-by-step instruction on speech criticism is introduced in Chapter 4 along with discussion on reacting to criticism that shows students how to use feedback constructively.
    • Critiquing guidelines printed in the back of the book serve as a reference tool.
    • A model speech and speech critique are included in the appendix.
    • Annotated speeches appear in Chapters 15 and 17 and illustrate how two students constructed their informative and persuasive speeches.
  • Emphasis on critical thinking:  In-text discussions of specific critical thinking skills are incorporated throughout the text, appearing early in the chapters to reinforce how critical thinking relates to each topic at hand.
  • Emphasis on technology:  Updated coverage of electronic research sources, with increased emphasis on databases and academic search engines, provides a ready-reference for students conducting research. MLA and APA bibliographic forms for electronic sources offer students a number of examples for reference. The text also includes a strong emphasis on how to evaluate Internet sites.
  • Two full chapters on persuasion highlight persuasive theory, types of argument, and a discussion of logical fallacies.
  • Eleven sample speeches represent a diversity of speakers and occasions: student and professional speakers; classroom and contest student speeches; speeches by two-year, four-year, and graduate school students; informative, persuasive, and special occasion speeches (Ch. 15, 17, 18 & Appendix). Several of the speeches appear in video format on MySpeechLab.
  • A section on how to cite sources in a speech provides an easy-to-understand reference for students (Ch. 8).
  • Current examples, including those that reflect greater cultural diversity and changes in technology, can be found throughout the book.

  • "Theory into Practice,” a boxed feature that appears in every chapter, helps students understand and apply concepts and strategies of public communication to enhance their speaking competence.
  • Try This” boxes, also in each chapter, engage students in specific assignments that will prepare them for speeches they give in and outside of class. Students may self-select these activities or they may be assigned by their instructors.
  • Selected sample speeches discussed in the book are available on MySpeechLab in video format, offering visual examples for students.
  • A stunning new design will engage students while presenting content in a more user-friendly style.
  • Key content updates include:
    • Chapter 1, “An Introduction to Public Speaking,” more clearly illustrates how students use critical thinking skills as they research, construct, and deliver their speeches.
    • Chapter 7, “Researching Your Topic,” now recognizes that most students research primarily online. New information focuses on searching more deeply on the web while continuing to emphasize the quality of library subscription databases and academic and subject-specific search engines.
    • Chapter 8, “Supporting Your Speech,” expands its already strong emphasis on how to cite sources, especially from the Internet, with additional examples of poor versus good oral footnotes.
    • Chapter 12, “Wording Your Speech,” elevates the importance of using inclusive language and using oral style.
