Teaching in America, 5/e, is a hands-on, practical text that provides preservice teachers with comprehensive and current information about teaching in today’s diverse American classrooms.

The Fifth Edition promises to be the most dynamic and practical to date. With a complete redesign; a host of new research, features, and exercises; as well as a new feature box designed specifically to show pre-service teachers how to use observation effectively, this text is sure to draw attention beyond its steady and loyal base. Its “working-text” style continues to provide preservice teachers with extensive opportunities to interact with the text while establishing both the foundations of American education and a clear picture of the realities of contemporary teaching. Its increased emphasis on accountability woven throughout the text and the marginal references to INTASC standards raise the

readers’ awareness of key initiatives in education in the 21st century. The frequent and insightful questions sprinkled throughout each chapter require students to continually stop and reflect on how theories, research and current events are relevant to teaching practices. Teaching in America provides the reader with a firm understanding of education as an institution and as a career, as well as a comprehensive knowledge of teaching competencies and issues in education.

All new chapter opening vignettes are written by classroom teachers or administrators, giving readers a glimpse of life in the classroom and in schools and their communities.

  • Reflect & Write activities facilitate student interaction throughout the text and encourage active learning while promoting reflective practice to assist with retention and learning.Organized around the key theme of active learning, this feature, in combination with other features throughout the text, provide students with more opportunities than any other text for personal reflection and creative problem solving.
  • You Decide boxes present discussions of current controversial topics in education and ask students to weigh in on their views using research and what they have learned in the chapter to support their perspective.
  • In the Classroom feature boxes replace Profiles from the previous editions.  These boxes describe the practices of leading teachers and administrators, often in their own words. Many of these features are new or have been updated reflecting classrooms with increasingly diverse learners.
  • What’s New in Education? replace Education on the Move from previous editions. These features present new approaches, trends, legislation and  innovations that are impacting today’s schools including comprehensive community involvement, new uses for technology, and single-sex classrooms.
  • What Does This Mean for You? This feature, mostly presented in the margin, explains how information in the text with regard to educational policy, philosophy, finance, laws, and so on, will impact the reader’s role as a teacher.
  • Marginal INTASC standards are linked to chapter material by marginal icons throughout the text; NCATE standards are listed and correlated to relevant chapters on the inside cover of the text.

Marginal URLs are presented throughout the text to drive readers to relevant web sites that tie to the text. These URLs, as well as URLs listed at the end of some of the box features are particularly useful for on-line courses, where students and professors are already using the web to interact.

NEW! This book now comes integrated with MyEducationLab, a unique site for you and your students where the classroom comes to life. Icons throughout the text integrate online features such as authentic in-class video footage, interactive simulations, rich case studies, and teacher and student artifacts designed specifically to support Teaching in America, 5e — all at no extra cost to your students! • Your Turn - Placed in the margin near relevant content, this item asks students to imagine themselves in a particular situation and explain how they would resolve related issues.
    • Observe and Learn - Observation is a powerful tool that can tell teachers a lot about their students and about how to run their classroom. These short feature boxes recommend ways in which readers can use observation to inform their instruction and to use as an assessment tool when teaching.
    • Ethical Dilemmas - Each chapter concludes with a situation in which new teachers may find themselves, whether they are put in a position in which they have to challenge authority, or they may disagree with senior members of a committee on which they are a new member, or they may wonder why their students aren’t getting their fair share of school supplies. After each scenario is presented, the readers are asked to determine how they will respond to these real life dilemmas.
    • End of chapters summaries/list of key terms - End of chapter summaries and key terms are new to this edition, allowing students to quickly assess whether they have grasped all of the key issues discussed in the chapter and whether they have integrated the key concepts into their education vocabulary.
