“Built specifically for writers, MyCompLab is an integrated environment that supports all aspects of the composing process.” — Stuart Selber, Associate Professor of English and Director of Composition, Penn State University

The new MyCompLab empowers student writers and facilitates writing instruction by uniquely integrating a composing space and ePortfolio with proven resources and tools.  In this revolutionary application, students receive feedback within the context of their own writing–encouraging critical thinking and revision while honing their skills based on individual needs. Administrative features developed specifically for writing instruction bring instructors closer to their student writers, make managing assignments and evaluating papers more efficient, and save instructors time.

Taking the market-leading resources for writing, grammar and research that users have come to identify with the program, the new MyCompLab integrates those resources with an online composing space and new assessment tools.  In the easy-to-use composing space, which looks and functions like the most popular word processing programs, resources are available at a student’s fingertips as they research, draft, and revise;  students can get the help they need when they need it, without ever leaving their writing environment.  All student work in the course can be saved in MyCompLab so instructors are able to access and manage their students’ writing in one place.

In this same space, students can view instructor, peer, and tutor comments on their work, pulling together all the feedback they’ll need to produce better writing.  The intuitive commenting functionality of the new MyCompLab will save instructors significant time by allowing them to insert favorite comments and common errors.  It also allows instructors to create personalized study plans for students by linking to topics in the Resource library from the student’s own writing.

The Portfolio feature is another key enhancement of the new MyCompLab.  With only a few clicks, students create e-portfolios of their work that they can easily share with their instructor, other evaluators, and peers.  Students can include multimodal compositions in their portfolios, export them as .html or PDF files, or continue adding to them throughout their college career and beyond.

The To Do section of the new MyCompLab enables instructors to easily create and deliver assignments online and helps keep students on track by listing due dates and assignment details in one place.   Another feature to keep everyone on track is the flexible Gradebook.  Capturing student grades from self-grading aspects of the site and grades given to writing assignments by the instructor, the Gradebook allows instructors to easily assess student and class progress.

Students can use the new MyCompLab on their own, benefiting from the composing space and its integrated resources, tools, and services with no involvement from the instructor.  Instructors can integrate MyCompLab into their traditional or online courses to whatever degree they’d like: from simply using exercises in the Resource section for homework or extra help to delivering their entire course online.  An eminently flexible application, MyCompLab can be used in whatever way an instructor finds useful for their course and teaching style.

Seamless integration. The new MyCompLab is the only available application for composition that integrates all the functionality and materials necessary for a composition course in one easy-to-use place: student writing; instruction and exercises; instructor, peer and tutor feedback; an e-portfolio; assignments; course calendar; gradebook; and more.  “I like the fact that everything in the new MyCompLab is integrated.  Tutorials and exercises are integrated with student writing, which is integrated with feedback, which is integrated with grades – all in one place.” - Christopher Twigg, Florida Community College - Jacksonville

Flexibility. An eminently flexible application, MyCompLab can be used in whatever way and to whatever extent an instructor finds useful for their course and teaching style.

Resources. The Resources area offers instruction, multimedia and exercises for a wide range of writing, grammar and research topics.  All content from the current version of MyCompLab resides in this area.  Students can access the Resources on their own at any time to get help on particular topics or instructors can assign topic modules to their class as homework.  Instructors can also easily link a student to specific topic help as they are evaluating the student’s paper - creating a personalized study plan based on the student’s own writing. Each writing, grammar and research topic in the Resource area is accompanied by two or all three of the following:

  • Instruction: Textual explanations and guidance.
  • Multimedia: Video and audio tutorials that address multiple learning styles.
  • Exercises: An abundance of practice opportunities, which include multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank quizzes, short answer and essay questions, as well as in-context editing. MyCompLab feeds the results of all exercises and activities into the Gradebook.

Composing space.  The new MyCompLab’s dynamic space for composing, editing, and revising includes a "Writer’s Toolkit" at the writers’ fingertips.  Students receive feedback and support within the context of their own writing as they draft new papers and/or review uploaded documents. Built to look and function like the most popular word processing programs, students will find MyCompLab’s composing space familiar and easy-to-use.

  • Writer’s Tool Kit: Students access resources at point of need in the writing process without leaving their composing space. Carefully developed by the MyCompLab Faculty Advisory Board, the Toolkit includes writing tips, writing samples, grammar and editing FAQs, commonly confused words, a writer’s wiki, and more.
  • Research: Research resources include tools for Evaluating Sources & Avoiding Plagiarism tools, MLA and APA models and a Bibliography Builder.
  • Tutoring: Students also have a access to a SmartThinking tutor. Within 24 hours, the tutor will review the paper and comment directly in the student's draft.
  • Search:  Students can do a key word search from any screen in MyCompLab to find resources and information on that topic within the program.

Commenting.  The composing space connects students to tools and resources, but more important, it connects them with their instructor and their peers.  Instructors can quickly and easily add comments, save favorite comments, insert common errors, assign a grade, and link students to instruction and practice.  To connect students with their peers, instructors can create Peer Review and Collaboration assignments. Instructor and/or peer comments appear within the student’s composition in a distinguishable font. Instructors (and instructors only) have access to a drop-down menu of Common Errors, which are complemented by a brief description of the error and links to instruction, multimedia tutorials and practice exercises.  In this way, instructors are recommending remediation and skill-building based on the student’s own writing.

Portfolio.  MyCompLab is the first composition application to include portfolio functionality, enabling students to create, store and manage e-porttfolios of their work.  Portfolios can contain documents created within MyCompLab, as well as imported documents. Students can create multiple portfolios, specify the order in which documents are presented, decide who has permission to view and comment, and export their portfolios in either PDF or HTML format. Students can save their work across multiple courses, disciplines, or even years of study and personal development.

To Do. The To Do section is where instructors create, view, and grade all assignments and where students have access to all their assignments.

  • Instructor view. The instructor’s view of the To Do contains MyCompLab’s unique Assignment Builder and Course Calendar. It’s where instructors go to access simple forms that make creating assignments a snap (see below).
  • Student view. Once an assignment is created, it appears in the student To Do. A student’s To Do is their virtual study plan, making it simple to manage their writing and assignments. But their To Do isn’t limited to composition class—students may add other reminders and personal items to their calendar, allowing them to make it their own for other classes and beyond.

Assignment builder.  To create assignments for their course, instructors can choose from six types of assignment forms: composition, collaboration, peer review, portfolio, diagnostics, and skill building.  In just a few simple steps, the instructor is able to set up a complete assignment. Assignments can easily be copied and carried over from semester to semester or can just as easily be shared with colleagues.

Gradebook.  The MyCompLab Gradebook, built specifically for courses with a heavy writing component, makes it easy to capture, assess, and manage student submissions and data. Instructors view class assignment and practice results by student, class or topic. The gradebook includes the grades you have given to student assignments completed in MyCompLab’s composing space, exercise results from the Resources section (automatically scored by MyCompLab), as well as other grades you choose to add (e.g., class participation, extra credit assignments).

Home. MyCompLab’s Home provides a convenient overview of all user information.. Instructors are able to view and access course details, a gradebook summary, assignments that need to be graded, student portfolios and their To Do calendar. Likewise, students see a summary of their course details, recommended resources, writing and portfolios they last worked on, and their To Do calendar.

What People Are Saying

“As an instructor, I'm elated with the ease of using MyCompLab, from creating assignments to organizing a class online. For students, MyCompLab offers an integrated learning environment that places everything they need to compose at their fingertips.”
- Bill Endres, University of Arizona (MyCompLab Advisory Board Member)

“MyCompLab offers an integrated environment that is designed to help us teach and learn better. Up until now we use a little piece from here and a little piece from there and each little piece we add takes time and adds to the overall confusion factor. The fact that everything is integrated and sensible is wonderful.”
- Eric Hoffman , Northern Illinois University (MyCompLab Advisory Board Member)

“MyCompLab provides all the tools you need under one roof. It enables you to do what you already do, but save time. I love that the composing spaces allows you to have all your students' papers in one place and that comments can be tied to resources. Students often have trouble understanding instructor comments on their papers, but if you can link students to resources related to that comment, they have an easier time understanding.”
- Rob Lee, Pasadena City College

“I am most excited about the composing space. The ability for students AND teachers to create and review documents, as well as keep track of grades, in the same space and with the same application, is a truly dynamic and unique ‘feature' of MyCompLab. However, I am also very excited about the portfolio feature--one, again, that other applications do not include.”
- Kelly Martin, Collin County Community College (MyCompLab Advisory Board Member)

“I'm most excited about the use of e-portfolio in MyCompLab. First Year Composition is being pushed from all sides to adopt outcomes assessment, and e-portfolios have long been the best method to balance the needs of students, teachers, and administrators in developing outcomes which make sense for classroom needs. By incorporating e-portfolios in to MyCompLab, Pearson is ensuring a lot flexibility for departments looking to survive and even thrive in the coming assessment wars.”
- Bob Cummings, Columbus State University (MyCompLab Advisory Board Member)

“MyCompLab is an easy, engaging way to deliver more interactive and up-to-date teaching. I am very interested in the portfolio section, and I especially like the peer review.  The composing space is a great tool in helping students become better writers.”
- Susan Perry, Greenville Technical College

“This new MyCompLab is extremely accessible and everything you need is in one place.”
- Julia Bleakney, Saddleback College

“I'm most excited about the features that directly support the writing process. Reference documents and testing spaces are important, but there are a lot of products out there meant to do that. We need more environments that provide instruction directly in the spaces in which composing happens. This, to me, is what's exciting about MyCompLab: the relatively tight integration of composing and instruction on composing.”
- Stuart Selber, Penn State University (MyCompLab Advisory Board Member)

“MyCompLab is a very helpful addition to teaching composition online or in the classroom. Enabling students to click on links to get answers to questions about composition accomodates the way today's students think.”
- Mary Anne Nagler, Oakland Community College

“With the new MyCompLab we have the opportunity to give students individualized help because we can link them to exercises from within their own papers in the composing space. I also like its simplicity and design — it looks easy to use.”
- Jan Laville, Des Moines Area Community College

“I like that students can see feedback on their writing from multiple audiences at once–their instructor, fellow students, etc.”
- Liz Rohan, University of Michigan — Dearborn

“MyCompLab will enable instructors to easily and directly connect students to resources about their writing. The peer review features look strong.”
- Scott Warnock, Drexel University

“I would describe the new MyCompLab as a program that helps instructors organize their classes. More importantly, it helps students know exactly what is going on and gives them ways to get help — they can find resources and take charge of their learning. Also, it seems like an easy-to-use program. I think it would be especially good for instructors who aren't tech savvy — everything is right there and spelled out.”
- Michelle Krueger , Central Michigan University

“I love the portfolio feature and the ability to share portfolios with outside readers.  I also like that MyCompLab enables you to compile instructor, peer and tutor feedback in one space.  MyCompLab is an online tool that connects the major components of the composing process: research, drafting, feedback, and tools for editing.”
- Keri Dutkiewicz, Davenport University

“MyCompLab is a dynamic electronic space where students can create and share texts, get and give feedback, collaborate on a piece of writing, and create/revise a portfolio to bring with them to other courses.”
- Liz Canfield , Virginia Commonwealth University (MyCompLab Advisory Board Member)

“I like the idea of sharing a common space for composition, peer and instructor response. If fully realized, the new MyCompLab promises to provide a ‘lingua franca' for members of a composition class community, resolving the compatability problems that plague current course management systems.
- Miles McCrimmon, J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College (MyCompLab Advisory Board Member)

“I like that MyCompLab will enable me to keep track of student writing online rather than with lots of papers in folders. It will help students keep track of their work too.”
- Marti Singer , Georgia State University

“My favorite parts of the new MyCompLab are the Writer's Toolkit and To Do list. I'd say MyCompLab is a great facilitator — part course management, part online evaluation program. It makes a much better virtual writing classroom than WebCT.”
- Susan J. Miller, Santa Fe Community College

“MyCompLab uses the latest technology to aid in teaching and managing a composition course.”
- Jose Flores, Austin Community College (MyCompLab Advisory Board Member)
