Flexible format

 

The Humanities is available in two Volumes or six Books.   The contents are exactly the same whether divided into Volumes I and II or Books 1 to 6.  Volume I is comprised of Books 1, 2, and 3 and Volume II is comprised of Books 4, 5, and 6. 

 

With this choice of formats, instructors have greater flexibility in selecting the content and format that will best fit their course needs.  The smaller Books offer a more portable way of accessing the content, while each volume contains a semester’s content in one place.

Primary Source Readings

Each chapter of The Humanities includes primary source readings in two formats. Brief readings from important works are included within the body of the text (p.560). Longer readings located at the end of each chapter allow for more in-depth study of particular works (pp. 574-576). Each reading is called out with a reading number and appears in a shaded box, making them easy to locate.

 

There is a substantial selection of well-chosen readings for every chapter of the book.  Instructors can choose to assign all, some, or none of the readings from each chapter, depending on their course needs. This organization offers great flexibility in teaching the course.

 

 

Focus

Highly visual Focus features offer an in-depth look at a particular work from one of the disciplines of the humanities (pp. 550-551).  These annotated discussions give students a personal tour of the work—with informative captions and labels—to help students understand its meaning.  The visual layout of the Focus boxes draws students’ attention to specific details of the work under consideration, providing explanations for important details that could otherwise be overlooked.

 

 

Voices

Included in every chapter, Voices features (p. 559) offer vivid first-person accounts of the experiences of ordinary people during the period covered in the chapter.  These primary source readings offer a glimpse at what life was like in the past and help students understand the social context of a particular culture.

 

 

Chapter Openers

These visual introductions feature a central image from the location covered in the chapter. Several smaller images represent the breadth of disciplines and cultures covered throughout the book. An engaging quote drawn from one of the chapter’s readings and a brief list of the chapter’s major topics are also included (pp. 540-541).  The chapter opener serves as a snapshot of the chapter and sets the context of time and place. 

 

Map Program

A locator map at the beginning of each chapter situates the areas discussed in the chapter (p. 542).  In addition, each chapter features detailed maps that relate directly to text discussion (pp. 543, 563).  The entire map program was specially commissioned and drawn for this text.  Locator maps help orient the reader to the geographic area that will be discussed in the chapter.  Detailed maps provide information that enhances the text discussion. 

 

 

Context boxes

Context boxes provide additional reference information for the reader on a specific topic discussed in the chapter (p. 646).  Important background information is summarized in an easy-to-read format.

 

 

Materials and Techniques

Materials and Techniques boxes explain and illustrate the means by which artists and architects produced their work (p. 647).  These boxes give students a more thorough understanding of complex techniques. 

 

 

Make Connections:

 

Continuity and Change essays and cross-references

Full-page Continuity & Change essays at the end of each chapter illustrate the influence of one culture on another and show cultural changes over time (p. 579).

 

Continuity & Change cross references provide a window into the past. These eye-catching icons enable students to refer to material in other chapters that is relevant to the topic at hand (pp. 547, 552, 557).

 

These features help students understand that a dynamic relationship between tradition and innovation exists in all cultures and civilizations.  Cultures cherish their traditions and institutions, even as they seek to change them.

 

 

Cultural Parallels

Included in every chapter, Cultural Parallels highlight historical and artistic developments occurring in different locations during the period covered in the chapter (p. 548).  This feature helps students understand developments in the humanities across the globe.

 

 

Critical Thinking Questions

Critical thinking questions at the end of each chapter prompt readers to synthesize material from the chapter (p. 578).  Not simply comprehension questions, the critical thinking questions encourage students to make connections and draw conclusions about chapter content.

 

 

More coverage of Music

A CD icon calls out musical selections discussed in the text that are found on the supplemental CDs available for use with The Humanities (p. 552).  Musical selections are easy to identify within each chapter.
