The Basic Reading Skills Handbook, 6th edition, provides reading skills instruction, reference and practice for a first-level college reading course, in a convenient handbook format.

The unique two-part format allows students to focus on skills they need the most and develop the skills in a meaningful context. Part One, the handbook provides basic reading skill instruction and exercises. Part Two, the anthology includes twelve high-interest readings and a casebook on "Romance, Love, and Marriage," so that students can apply newly learned skills. Both the handbook chapters and the attached anthology offer extensive exercises keyed to the handbook presentation.

  • Handbook is formatted for reading skills.
  • Self-assessment tests for every chapter help students track progress and review tests for each unit provide an overview of the material discussed.
  • Includes an anthology of high interest readings with exercises that are keyed to the handbook chapters.
  • Special attention is given to using context clues and to learning multiple meanings of words.
  • Includes extensive practice in comprehension skills, such as finding the main idea, sorting out major and minor details, and making inferences.
  • A “Cultural Exchange” glossary for each chapter and reading selection to explains references to cultural traditions and the languages and customs of the diverse peoples of the United States.
  • A “Writing to Read” unit covers underlining, listing, summarizing and making personal connections with the reading.

  • Handbook includes one-third new material including exercises throughout and high interest reading selections in the anthology.
  • A new chapter on critical reading, including critical evaluation of internet resources.
  • A new section on the visual organization of Web sites, plus integration of Web sites into the exercises throughout the handbook.
  • Internet resources and internet activities are included with every anthology selection.
  • A single-theme casebook at the end of the anthology for integrated holistic reading on a high-engagement topic.
