Textcerpts is a developmental reading text intended to facilitate the acquisition of textbook reading skills, applying developmental course instruction to college courses.

Providing college readers with the opportunity for extended practice with textbook reading, Textcerpts helps students apply reading skills to real textbook chapters. With twenty short excerpts and eight complete chapters representing eight different college disciplines, this unique text includes a wealth of exercises in comprehension, vocabulary, and critical thinking. Additional guidelines for effective reading of text material and a solid orientation to the college disciplines make this text indispensable to instructors and students looking to bridge learned textbook reading skills to actual class content.

  • Eight full chapters from eight college disciplines provide extensive practice with college reading and promote familiarity with the college textbook format.
  • Twenty short excerpts from college textbooks introduce students to the college disciplines and provide a more focused practice of textbook reading.
  • Vocabulary exercises accompanying all chapters and excerpts build students' vocabulary knowledge and context skills.
  • Chapter tests, located in the Instructor's Manual, allow professors to assess student understanding and help students practice their test-taking skills.
  • Comprehension questions throughout the text enable students to evaluate their grasp of chapter topics and further develop their reading skills.
  • Strategy instruction, located in the Introduction and throughout the chapters, encourages students to develop sound approaches to textbook reading and study.
  • Critical thinking questions encourage critical reading and critical thinking, facilitating opportunities for individual writing and class discussion.

  • Four of the original chapters in Part III have been replaced with entirely new chapters from current textbooks in humanities, criminal justice, media, and psychology.
  • Three chapters from Part III have been updated to the current edition of the source textbook.
  • All eight chapters represent the most recent editions of their source texts at the time of this printing.  Most are 2005 and 2006 editions.
  • In Part II, nine excerpts have been replaced with new material, and three have been updated to current editions.
  • Several additional, and very important, changes make the second edition of Textcerpts an even better resource than the first edition:
    • High-Interest Readings. The new Part III chapters have been selected with student interest and relevance in mind.  These chapters are on the subjects of love, crime victims and perpetrators, stress and health, and the Web.  Topics for the new selections from Part II include youth gangs, animal communication, population growth, family, caring (for nurses), the Harlem Renaissance, e-mail, and mathematical probability.
    • Organization by Discipline. The short selections in Part II have been grouped into four broad discipline categories: humanities, social sciences, science and math, and career-related disciplines.
    • Patterns of Organization.  An introduction to five common patterns of organization has been added to Part I, and a recognizing patterns of organization question has been added to each exercise in Part II. In Part III, the directions ask students to identify patterns of organization as they work through each section of each chapter.
    • Sample Annotations. In addition to the annotated sample textbook passage in Part I, an annotated sample of the first selection in each of the five sections is included in Part II of the text. These sample annotations provide excellent models for getting the most out of textbook reading.
