Sterling Stories is a brief anthology of 12 short stories geared toward students reading at the most basic level.

The anthology was carefully designed to maximize students’ reading and writing abilities using a rich literature collection from a diverse collection of authors.  The text begins with a sample lesson — introducing reading skills, note-taking, and literary terms —designed for the developmental learner. Each story contains pre-reading vocabulary exercises and questions, headnotes, a journal entry worksheet, comprehension quizzes, and writing prompts.

  • A sample lesson. Students get practice with the book's pedagogy using Kate Chopin's very short story, Ripe Figs.
  • Pre-Reading Vocabulary Exercises. Students use word attack skills to define and learn words necessary for understanding the story.
  • Pre-Reading Questions. Pre-reading apparatus makes the story more accessible to students by setting up purpose of story.
  • Biographical Headnotes. Notes about the author provide context for readers.
  • Journal Entry Worksheets.  Activities following each story encourage student to participate in the story by developing an MLA Works Cited entry, separating main from supporting characters, identifying setting, sequencing and summarizing events, identifying conflicts, and more.
  • Significant quotations. A quote follows each story and tests for comprehension.
  • Comprehension Quizzes. Three quizzes per story test students’ understanding through multiple choice, short answer, and essay questions.
  • Writing Prompts. These topics provide further writing assignments both personal and research writing.
  • Glossary of Literary Terms. A quick-reference glossary is included.
