The first in a new three-book series, Developing Vocabulary provides students with discipline-specific vocabulary strategies and strategies for everyday situations.

The exercises challenge students to explore words through context clues, word analysis, proper usage, and application so that the chapters are associative, comprehensive, and generative. This series makes a perfect companion to the Henry reading series (The Skilled Reader, The Effective Reader, and The Master Reader) or stand alone.

  • Longer readings—Single- or multiple-paragraph readings are used to introduce words and fully develop their contexts.
  • Word lists–Every chapter opens with a discipline-specific list of common terms the student may expect to encounter, laying a foundation for success.
  • “Getting Ready to Read About” feature–A three-part structure opens each chapter: an introduction that includes a visual, information about a particular college course, and the word parts to help students understand discipline specific vocabulary.
  • Vocabulary in Context–To help students remember the meaning of the word, chapter exercises require students to explore words through context clues.
  • Synonyms and Antonyms–Used as a means of broadening the scope of the student’s vocabulary, exercise on synonyms and antonyms are included in each chapter.
  • “Stop and Think” feature–Two end-of-chapter exercises provide additional practice with new words.
  • “Visual Vocabulary” featureThis feature was developed to help visual learners use images to develop their college vocabularies. Photographs and drawings are accompanied by captions for students to complete as a quick test of vocabulary development and reading comprehension.
  • Academic Conditioning–readings are drawn from sources across the disciplines, priming students for words they will encounter in future courses.
  • Unit Review Tests–Each unit is closed by a comprehensive test to reinforce the material and offer more practice.
  • Perfect complement to The Skilled ReaderThe instruction of Developing Vocabulary has been integrated with The Skilled Reader.  To order a value-priced package of both books, use ISBN 0-321-48034-1.
