Academic Vocabulary supplements a reading text at the highest level and develops vocabulary for academic subjects through thematic readings, interactive exercises, and self-tests.

The chapters and exercises are “scaffolded” so that what has been presented in previous chapters is reinforced progressively as the student moves through the book. A variety of exercises stimulates different learning styles as well as encourages cross-referencing of the words through different contexts. Self-tests and games in each chapter round out the exposure for each vocabulary word.

  • Each reading is taken from a popular and accessible academic source, covering different areas of study.
  • A four-color visual design is used to link clues with words to improve vocabulary acquisition.
  • "Scaffolded” (or progressive) readings use previously presented vocabulary words in a new context, giving students continuous contact with new words.
  • Predicting Exercises have students write-out the definition instead of picking from a list, helping students to remember the meaning of the word. The Predicting directions also ask students to cover the Word List making the section more useful.
  • Interactive exercises give students an opportunity to play with words and put them into personal contexts to facilitate learning.
  • A brief and practical Hint box in every chapter helps students improve vocabulary, reading, and study skills.
  • Flashcards are located at the end of the book for student practice.
  • StudyWizard CD-ROM (optional) with exercises, recorded readings, and an audio pronunciation guide. Available with the text (ValuePack ISBN: 0-321-46382-X).

  • New readings in this edition are about 10% longer, giving students more time to practice reading and greater opportunity to acquire a more academically relevant vocabulary. Still maintaining their college-discipline focus, many of the readings have been updated or replaced with new, more interesting selections covering the same subject.
  • A more sophisticated visual program promises to be most attractive edition published to date, thus increasing its appeal to students.
  • Six-page format for each chapter allows students to tear out and hand in the self-test pages, without losing any important instructional content in the book.
  • New feature, Word Wise, teaches students about denotations and connotations, collocations, word parts, and etymologies.
  • New Words to Watch exercises get students writing their own sentences with words they have just learned in the chapter; this not only gives them a sense of ownership, but it also helps them to take a more “interactive role” in building their vocabulary.
  • Word List (with definitions) now appears at the end of each chapter, instead of directly following the related Predicting exercise at the beginning of the chapter. Students now have a greater opportunity to predict the meanings of words before they are shown their actual meanings.  The interactive exercises are now the last exercise in each chapter, providing greater benefit to students once they have completed all of the practice exercises in the chapter.
  • Improved and updated StudyWizard CD-ROM with ample practice quizzes, an audio-pronunciation guide for each vocabulary word, and audio selections of the readings found in the text.
