Discovery focuses on helping students build sentence and paragraph writing skills through self and academic discovery, using a full-color design to pique student interest.

With its encouraging tone, careful explanations, and abundance of precisely sequenced and incrementally challenging exercise sets, Discovery enables students to view writing as a means of discovering more about themselves and their surroundings.

The book starts with an overview of the writing process, and special attention is given to prewriting and the development of topic and supporting sentences. Parts II through V provide lucid and well-illustrated explanations of basic sentence elements, grammar, punctuation, and mechanics. Part VI is a section of student and professional reading selections. This part includes an introduction to critical reading and comprehension and contains numerous writing exercises. An end-of-book appendix provides practical advice for ESL students who are learning English grammar and writing. Grammar, mechanics, and punctuation chapters conclude with chapter quick-checks that call upon students to use all the grammar and sentence skills learned in the chapter.

  • Discovery offers a progression of exercises that begin on the comprehension level with practice of fundamental concepts. At the next level, “Challenge,” the exercises focus on reflection, critical thinking, and invention and require short written responses. The exercises then proceed to “Discovering Connections” in which students are prompted to prewrite, draft, and revise.
  • The attractive full-color design provides visual stimulation and emphasis for key concepts.
  • "Moving from Paragraph to Essay" chapter introduces the process of creating multi-paragraph writings, tracing an essay through each stage of the writing process to include a transition to longer pieces of writing.
  • Engaging and realistic writing samples model successful writing as they illustrate all aspects of writing, grammar, and usage.
  • Facsimile examples of all stages of the writing process, plus annotated papers, peer responses, and instructor’s comments, provide a unique window into the writing process.
  • Full-color charts throughout the text offer graphic representations of key relationships among elements of the writing process, parts of speech, and sentence elements.
  • Spotlight pieces in Chapters 1 through 5 feature annotated student writing, modeling what students can achieve.
  • Journal writing activities in each chapter, provide an opportunity for discovery through writing.
  • Extensive and comprehensive coverage of the areas of grammar and usage that most trouble student writers, including sentence fragments, comma splices, and run-on sentences; verb use; subject–verb agreement; spelling; pronoun–antecedent agreement; modifiers; subordination and coordination; and punctuation.
  • Chapter Quick Checks and Summary Exercises, covering all the concepts presented in a chapter in a single exercise, appear in all chapters in Parts Two through Five.
  • Chapter Recaps provide definitions of new terms in the chapter as well as visual summaries of key concepts.
  • An anthology of seven professional and eight student readings (with seven of the readings newly chosen for this edition) provides opportunities for critical thinking and active reading as well as for discussion and writing.
  • Discovering Connections through Reading activities follow each of the readings in Part Six. These activities include questions and writing assignments in reaction to the ideas presented in or raised by the readings.
  • Appendix: Tips for ESL Writers presents additional grammar and usage tips for ESL students.

  • Redesigned Chapter Openings, featuring Navigating This Chapter, Getting Started Q&A, and Overview, to make working through the chapters easier and to highlight the inquiry-based approach running throughout Discovery.
  • Many new and newly-revised Comprehension and Practice exercises and Challenge activities in every chapter, designed to create even greater mastery of the principles presented
  • Going Forward Q&A at the end of each chapter to restate the significance of the chapter and to serve as a bridge to the discussion that follows in the succeeding chapters
  • More than double the number of writing assignments and opportunities for writing as in previous editions of Discovery .
  • For Further Exploration writing assignments in every chapter, new in this edition, offer three distinct topics for consideration.  In addition, they offer specific guidelines in terms of development and editing related to the subject matter of the chapter in which they appear.
  • Innovative and challenging Discovering Connections writing activities, redesigned for this edition, appear in every chapter.  With both visual and verbal cues to spark creative associations, these assignments stimulate interest, imagination, and critical thinking, leading to thoughtful, effective writing. In addition, each contains at least one topic tied to career exploration.  These assignments are unmatched in other basic writing texts.
  • Five Faces of Discovery sections, appearing between the six parts of the text, with each featuring inspiring portraits of four students, their reactions to questions about writing challenges, and additional opportunities for writing.
  • Seven new readings in the reading anthology, four of them by student writers.
  • MyWritingLab: Where better practice makes better writers! MyWritingLab, a complete online learning program, provides better practice exercises for developing writers, and with better practice, your students will become better writers!
    • Progressive Learning: The heart of MyWritingLab is the progressive learning in the Recall, Apply and Write exercises within each module. In the 9,000 exercises system wide, students move from literal comprehension (Recall) to applying comprehension (Apply) to demonstrating concepts in their own writing (Write). This proven progression of critical thinking, not available in any other online resource, enables students to truly master the skills and concepts they need to be successful writers.
    • A Text-Correlated Learning Path: Based on their text in use, students are automatically provided with a customized learning path that complements their textbook’s table of contents and extends textbook learning.
    • Progress Tracker: All student work in MyWritingLab is captured in the site’s Progress Tracker.  Students can track their own progress and instructors can track the progress of their entire class in this flexible and easy-to-use tool.
    • Diagnostic Testing: MyWritingLab’s diagnostic test comprehensively assesses student skills in grammar.  Students are given an individualized learning path based on the diagnostic’s results, identifying the modules in areas where they most need help.
    • Additional resources for students in MyWritingLab include access to an interactive Study Skills website, access to Research Navigator, and a complimentary subscription to our English Tutor Center, which is staffed by live, college instructors.
