Making Meaning is a developmental reading text that balances teaching phonics and whole language skills for students who read below the 6th grade level.

Designed with the daily text and visual literacy needs of adult learners in mind, the text provides the tools needed to acquire the reading, writing, thinking, and reasoning skills that will enable students to effectively process, analyze, and learn information on their own.  A wide variety of readings are included, ranging from basic to challenging, which acknowledge students’ experiences and prepare them for the type of reading required in college. The text is designed to be visually appealing through the use of numerous photographs and other graphics that illustrate points made in the text, stimulate critical thinking, and teach students to read visual materials.

  • Making Meaning is recursive, giving the opportunity in each chapter for students to practice and integrate skills learned from previous lessons and apply those reading strategies to many kinds of texts.
  • A balanced approach to reading that teaches students both phonological awareness and whole language strategies in the context of content-rich literature-based activities which allows students---particularly adults---from a variety of educational backgrounds to build on their strengths and develop effective reading skills.
  • A focus on not only reading, but also writing, speaking, and listening as integral parts of increasing reading skills.
  • Numerous photographs and graphic illustrations (maps, charts, graphs, etc.) throughout the text make it appealing and accessible and illustrate how visuals are used to organize and explain textual information, providing oportunities to learn to make meaning from visual information.
  • Each chapter covers a major reading strategy in-depth and allows numerous opportunities for practice and mastery as it builds on the preceding chapters, allowing ample time to practice and fully learn each skill.
  • A wealth of high interest readings designed to appeal both to students fresh out of high school and to older learners let students enjoy success with shorter selections which will increase their willingness to meet the challenges of more difficult selections.
  • Preview boxes and illustrated analogy at the beginning of each chapter explain the main topic and an Introduction, which gives an overview of the topic and provides definitions of relevant terms, engaging student interest and explaining the benefit of the concept within the chapter.
  • Numerous, varied, creative, and unique exercises and activities throughout the text provide ample practice and application of skills both alone and together.
  • “Looking Back” review sections in chapters 2 through 7 require students to review, reflect, and activate prior knowledge.
  • Progress Charts in each chapter let students track their scores on Mastery Tests, Practice and Looking Back exercises, and self-evaluation questions helping them effectively gauge progress in the course.
  • “Wordnotes,” vocabulary definitions throughout the text help students increase their vocabulary, and create their own indexed lists.
  • Preface: To the Instructor
