Human Physiology: An Integrated Approach broke ground with its thorough coverage of molecular physiology seamlessly integrated into a traditional homeostasis-based systems approach . The newly revised Fourth Edition strengthens the coverage of the “big picture” themes in the study of physiology and helps students tie concepts together in a logical framework for learning.  Recognized as an extraordinary educator and meticulous author, Dr. Silverthorn also incorporates time-tested classroom techniques throughout the text and presents thorough, up-to-date coverage of new scientific discoveries, biotechnology techniques, and treatments of disorders.

Dr. Silverthorn also wrote the accompanying Student Workbook and co-authored the accompanying Instructor’s Resource Manual, ensuring that these ancillaries reinforce the pedagogical approach of the text. The revised edition is automatically packaged with thenew InterActive Physiology® 9-System Suite CD-ROM, featuring a new module on the Digestive System.

  • Four chapters on Integrative Physiology (Chapters 6, 13, 20, and 25) ask students to step back and look at the big picture to discover how the separate physiological processes work together in an integrated system. These chapters also explore how body systems influence each other and show that overall systems are often more complicated than the sum of their component parts.
  • Interactive pedagogy encourages students to assess their knowledge as they read rather than waiting until the end of the chapter
    • Background Basics sections at the beginning of each chapter allow students to revisit and review topics for the upcoming chapter.
    • Concept Links (signaled with blue chain link symbols) help students locate material they need to review.
    • Concept Checks areplaced at intervals throughout the chapters and ask students to test their understanding before continuing to the next topic.
    • Figure and graph questions promote analytical skills by asking students to interpret information presented in the art.
    • Real-life Running Problems appear in segments throughout each chapter and require students to apply what they have learned to a pathophysiology case study. The End-of-chapter, 4-level learning system helps build student confidence and understanding by progressing from factual questions to conceptual problems to analytical exercises to quantitative questions.
  •  Superb art program features:
    • Full-spread Anatomy Summaries show the anatomy of a physiological system from a macro to micro perspective.
    • Reflex pathway maps and concept maps present material in a logical, consistent, and easy-to-navigate format.
  • Coordinated feature boxes  provide relevance and enhance students'  knowledge of “hot topics” and include Clinical Focus (featuring several discussions on Diabetes), Biotechnology, and Emerging Concepts.

  • Chapters 1-4 have a greater focus on the “big picture” themes in the study of physiology to help students conceptualize and tie together concepts throughout the rest of the book. For example:
    • Chapter 2 includes a new section that describes the principles and importance of protein interactions so that students understand the common properties of enzymes, receptors, and membrane transport proteins.
    • Chapter 1 features expanded discussion of homeostasis and a new section on genomics, proteomics, and the importance of physiology in contemporary research.
    • Chapter 1 includes a new section on Searching and Reading the Scientific Literature, an important skill that is reinforced by questions and activities in the chapters that follow.
    • Chapter 3 has been expanded to include a short description of the basic anatomical compartments of the body. Information on cell membrane structure has been consolidated into this chapter.
  • Chapters on cardiovascular physiology, metabolism, and endocrine physiology have been expanded with up-to-date information on cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome and diabetes, with expanded coverage of cholesterol and lipid metabolism and their importance in these diseases.
  • Updated material and added “hot topics” discussions reflect current research and provide newsworthy and up-to-date science coverage.  Examples include sphingolipids and lipid rafts, motor proteins, a revised model of Golgi complex function, RNA interference, lipid neurocrines, cannabinoid receptors, TRP channels, ganglion cells, trans fats, and hypoxia-inducible factor 1.
  • Updated references to The Physiology Place companion website and InterActive Physiology® 9-System Suite CD-ROM in the end-of-chapter Chapter Summaries, including new Endocrine System and Digestive System topics.
  • More Powerful Instructor Supplements include a full set of transparencies for every figure in the book, and a comprehensive Media Manager CD-ROM for Instructors with customization features, animations, and PowerPoint lecture outlines.

Dee Unglaub Silverthorn studied biology as an undergraduate at Tulane University and went on to earn a Ph.D. in marine science at the University of South Carolina. Her research interest is epithelial transport, and work in her laboratory currently focuses on transport properties of the chick allantoic membrane. She began her teaching career in the Physiology Department at the Medical University of South Carolina but over the years has taught a wide range of students, from medical and college students to those still preparing for higher education.

At the University of Texas she lectures in physiology, coordinates student laboratories in physiology, and instructs graduate students in a course on developing teaching skills in the life sciences. She has substantial experience with active learning in the classroom and has given workshops on this subject at regional, national, and international conferences. Dee is currently editor-in-chief of Advances in Physiology Education and past-chair of the Teaching Section of the American Physiological Society. She works with members of the International Union of Physiological Sciences to improve physiology education in developing countries. She is also a member of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society, the Society for Comparative and Integrative Biology, the Association for Biology Laboratory Education, and the Society for College Science Teaching. Her free time is spent creating multimedia fiber art and enjoying the Texas hill country with her husband, Andy, and their three dogs.
