Admired and respected for its outstanding illustrations, the Fourth Edition of Essentials of Anatomy & Physiology provides students with easy-to-follow explanations of core concepts and a practical reference for future coursework for healthcare careers. Features such as Clinical Notes and the new Professional Profiles engage students by showing them how the information they have learned is applied to workplace situations. Crafted especially for students with no prior knowledge of anatomy & physiology, Essentials of Anatomy & Physiology provides a solid framework for interpreting and applying information.

  • Superb Art Program features “Stepped”  Figures that break down complex processes into easy-to-follow steps; large, clearly-labeled anatomy illustrations and photos that help students visualize structures; and simplified conceptual diagrams that provide “big picture” overviews of structure and function relationships.
  • System in Perspective summaries appear at the end of each sequence of body system chapters to help students quickly review the structures and functions of each body system and its associated organs.
  • Clinical Notes present relevant information on diseases and disorders to help students prepare for future workplace situations. These discussions are embedded in the running narrative to explain how pathologies relate to normal physiological function, and longer, “boxed” versions focus on core medical or social topics.
  • Thorough Self-Review Tools include Concept Checks that appear throughout the chapter to help students assess their understanding before moving on to the next topic; and end-of-chapter Review Questions that help students test their knowledge on facts and terminology (Level 1), concepts (Level 2), and critical thinking and clinical applications (Level 3).
  • Vocabulary Development sections on chapter-opening spreads list the important word roots that will form the basis of the vocabulary in the chapter.
  • Figure Locator Dots appear with every figure reference in the narrative and function as placeholders to help students return to reading after viewing a figure.
  • Concept Links provide quick visual signals that new material being presented is related to topics presented earlier. They offer specific page numbers to facilitate review.

  • Professional Profiles give students insight into health-related careers that require a basic understanding of anatomy & physiology.  These enlightening interviews appear at the end of each body system and include profiles for nursing, massage therapy, and dental assisting.

  • Key Notes organize core concepts in anatomy & physiology.  These factual statements are highlighted with an icon and appear at appropriate points throughout the text.

  • InterActive Physiology® 9-System Suite CD-ROM is now included with every new text and features a new Digestive System module. This award-winning tutorial program uses detailed animations and engaging quizzes to help students learn the most difficult concepts in the A&P course.

  • The Anatomy and Physiology Place open-access companion website includes chapter-correlated vocabulary practice, labeling activities, animations, case studies, quizzes, and practice tests.

  • MyA&P, an online learning tool for students and a course management system for instructors, is now offered as an optional supplement to with the text.

  • Instructor Media Manager CD-ROMs, combine instructor and student media into one convenient, chapter-by-chapter resource package and include all of the art and photos from the book with customizable labels. Precision Art selections featuring step-by-step PowerPoint® “slide show” views of the book’s complex art, customizable PowerPoint® lecture slides, over 180 animations, select tables from the book, and links to online student activities and tutorials. All resources are listed and organized in a handy Quick Reference Guide, and thumbnail views of the art and media are displayed in a separate, printed Instructor’s Visual Guide.
