Elementary Statistics is appropriate for a one-semester introductory statistics course, with an algebra prerequisite. ES has a reputation for being thorough and precise, and for using real data extensively. Students find the book readable and clear, and the math level is right for the diverse population that takes the introductory statistics course. The text thoroughly explains and illustrates concepts through an abundance of worked out examples.

  • New Case Studies: More than one-third of the chapter opener case studies are new and updated.
  • New and Updated Exercises: Neil Weiss has updated exercises (and relevant data sets) where appropriate and has provided many new exercises in this edition.
  • Procedure Boxes: Why, When, and How : The procedure boxes have been enhanced to include the "why, when, and how" of the methods. Each procedure box has a brief identifying title followed by a statement of its purpose (why it's used), the assumptions for its use (when it's used), and the steps for applying the procedure (how it's used).
  • Parallel Procedures for Hypothesis Testing: Both the critical-value and P-value approaches to hypothesis testing appear in a single split-format procedure box, for ease of use and for facilitating the comparison of the two approaches.
  • What Does It Mean: This feature is used to state in "plain English" the meaning of definitions, formulas, and key facts. It's also used to summarize certain types of discussions.
  • Parallel Presentations of Technology: The Weiss approach offers complete flexibility in the coverage of technology which includes options for use of MINITAB, Excel, and the TI-83 and TI-84 Plus. Instructions and output for each package are included in Technology Centers throughout the book.
  • Option for Brief Probability Coverage: Because of Weiss's unique presentation, only a basic coverage of probability is required. Weiss's flexibility allows instructors the option to cover as much or as little probability as they would like. Elementary Statistics has one optional probability chapter, though only a few sections are required to understand subsequent material.
  • Option for Brief Experimental Design Coverage: In the new edition, coverage of experimental designs is optional. Introductions to the principles of experimental design, terminology, of experimental design, and basic statistical designs are available for coverage at the instructor's discretion.
  • Option for Brief Sampling Coverage: In the new editions, the only sampling design required for study is simple random sampling. Further sampling designs (systematic random sampling, stratified sampling, cluster sampling, and multistage sampling) are available for coverage at the instructor's discretion.

  • Interpretation: This feature is an integral part of the solutions included in the worked examples. It points out how to interpret the results of statistical analyses.
  • StatExplore: StatExplore is online statistical software in MyMathLab, offering an easy-to-use interface and an alternative to commercial statistical software. Each chapter of ES contains a new feature that discusses the use of StatExplore to perform statistical analyses examined in the chapter and includes StatExplore exercises. StatExplore is customized for this textbook, and is available for use by qualified adopters at no charge.
  • Current Statistical Software: The new editions contain instructions and output for the new Release 14 of MINITAB in addition to instructions and output for Excel and the TI-83 and TI-84 Plus.
  • Focus Database: A brand new database has been constructed for the Focusing on Data Analysis sections that appear at the end of each chapter. These sections include problems related to the Focus Database. This database contains information on 13 variables for the undergraduate students attending the University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire. These students are considered a population of interest. Inferential methods are to be applied by sampling the database.
  • MyMathLab and MathXL for Statistics will be available with Weiss for the first time.

    Brief Description

About the Author

Neil A. Weiss received his Ph.D. from UCLA in 1970 and subsequently accepted an Assistant-Professor position at Arizona State University, where he was ultimately promoted to therank of Full Professor. Dr. Weiss has taught statistics, probability, andmathematics-from the freshman level to the advanced graduate level-for morethan 30 years. In recognition of his excellence in teaching, Dr. Weiss received the Dean's Quality Teaching Award from the ASU College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.   This comprehensive knowledge andexperience ensures that Weiss's texts are mathematically and statistically accurate as well as pedagogically sound.

In addition to his numerous research publications, Dr. Weiss has authored or co-authored books in finite mathematics, statistics, and real analysis, and is currently working on two new books: one in probability theory and the other in applied regression analysis and analysisof variance. Weiss's texts-well known for their precision, readability, and pedagogical excellence-are used worldwide.

Dr. Weiss is a pioneer of the integration of statistical software into textbooks and the classroom, first providing such integration over 20 years ago in the book Introductory Statistics (Addison-Wesley, 1982). Weiss and Addison-Wesley continue this pioneering spirit to this day with the inclusion of some of the most comprehensive Web sites in the field.

In his spare time, Dr. Weiss enjoys walking, studying and practicing meditation, and playing hold 'em poker. He has two sons.
