This text uses a chronological organization to teach principles of development and encourages readers to reflect on their own personal experience of development.

The authors believe that development follows a transactional approach where the process of human development is shaped by the continuous interplay, or transactions, between individuals and their environments. Exploring Child Development stresses the dynamic role of the environment, as well as biology and culture, in the developmental context. The theme of diversity is interwoven throughout the text. Critical thinking is also stressed. Though the text is research based, the tone is warm and personal with plenty of examples to which students can relate.

  • The text is organized in seven parts, each consisting of two chapters:
    • Part I covers the field of child development, including overviews of historical foundations, general theories, and the scientific method.

    • Part II contains two chapters on the genetic and environmental bases for prenatal development, birth, and neonatal development.

    • Parts III-VII each integrate a chapter on physical and cognitive development and a chapter on social and emotional development.

    • Part III covers development during infancy and toddlerhood.

    • Parts IV and V have two chapters each on early childhood and late childhood.

    • Parts VI and VII have two chapters each on early adolescence and late adolescence.

  • Unit part openers provide a personal vignette, unit overview, and set of learning objectives.
  • Part closures, called Grasping The Whole, include a “Benchmarks” chart that summarizes developmental changes in terms of the four developmental domains (physical, cognitive, social, and emotional).
  • Grasping The Whole also contains a “For More Info” section with annotated recommended readings, relevant organizations, and websites.
  • In Research Focus features in every chapter report in-depth on contemporary high-interest and ground-breaking studies in the field of child development. These features close with critical thinking questions called “Thinking It Through.”In Research Focus highlights this text's emphasis on scientific inquiry.
  • At Issue boxes invite reader evaluation and response through “Thinking It Through” questions. In every chapter, At Issue features highlight a controversial issue or trend relating to prenatal, neonatal, infant, child, or adolescent development, including issues raised in the media.
  • In Everyday Life features in every chapter provide practical advice about development for readers to apply to personal and professional real-life contexts.
  • In Cultural Context margin icons in the narrative of every chapter identify cross-cultural and multicultural examples, studies, issues, or points of view concerning topics in child development.
  • Key terms and concepts are boldfaced in the text narrative, defined in margin annotations on the page, and listed in the end-of-book “Glossary” with page cross-references.
  • Development Time Line, an end-of-book time line that summarizes development from conception to age 20, invites readers to record information on a parallel blank time line about their own (or their children's) developmental characteristics and experiences.

All chapters include “In Research Focus,” “At Issue,” and “In Everyday Life” features and conclude with “Chapter Summary,” “Key Terms and Concepts,” and “Activities and Applications.”
