This item has been replaced by Design in Reading: An Introduction to Critical Reading, 2/E.

Intended for advanced reading skills courses, Design in Reading is the only text that promotes critical thinking by focusing on two of the most common difficulties students have in accessing college level material — understanding the author's purpose and recognizing the main idea.

This integrated approach of idea and purpose thus allows students to know not only what they are reading, but why. With this foundation in place, the students are ready to master higher level thinking skills introduced in the text: recognizing tone, distinguishing fact and opinion, evaluating evidence, and recognizing basic fallacies in reasoning.

The text integrates the concepts of main idea and organization by identifying a core of main idea types and pattern elements. Students learn that there are different kinds of main ideas and that the kind of idea being formed determines the pattern of development an author chooses. Throughout, students practice recognizing and mapping these idea patterns. Part 1 introduces students to recognizing and working with these patterns in sentences, paragraphs, and short passages. Parts 2 and 3 present eight kinds of main ideas as the controlling ideas for longer passages and full-length articles.

  • Teaches critical thinking skills necessary to analyze and respond to the types of reading material that students will encounter in college.
  • The organization of the text allows for a simultaneous and progressive development of skills in two areas — recognizing the writer's purpose and finding the main idea throughout the text.
  • Presents three purposes for writing: mastering information (Part I), giving proof of opinion (Part II), and persuading to action (Part III). In each, the relationship of writer to reader shifts and grows increasingly more complex as the student proceeds through the text.
  • Identifies eight types of main ideas and their pattern elements allowing for a systematic analysis of paragraph structures.
  • Paragraphs and short passages used in examples and exercises are drawn primarily from current college textbooks in a variety of subject areas.
  • Uses pattern mapping throughout as a heuristic to help students understand the various organizational structures that authors employ.
  • Develops student skills of summary and paraphrase through teaching a recognition of main idea and pattern elements.
  • The readings were chosen not only as excellent examples of the concepts being presented, but because of their high level of student interest as well as their attention to a wide array of multicultural authors.
  • Vocabulary is taught in context. Questions follow many of the readings and frequent exercises direct students to create sentences of their own with new words that they encounter. In addition, four of the chapters in Part II introduce the importance of word parts in vocabulary building by providing a core of high frequency prefixes and roots.
  • Longer reading passages contain two previewing features indicated by special icons that help develop comprehension and critical thinking: “Getting on Track” includes directions on previewing, guidance to understanding main ideas, and selected vocabulary; and “Tracking the Main Idea” offers help in discovering pattern elements through an awareness of transitions.
  • Integrates instruction on higher level critical thinking skills such as drawing inferences, evaluating evidence, and identifying logical fallacies in many of the idea pattern chapters.
  • Unique Reading Portfolio assignments provide opportunities for ongoing student reading and writing activity throughout the course.

Each chapter includes “Chapter Preview” and “Chapter Review.”
