Introduces students to the skills and theory of communication while focusing on the connection of communication to their lives, their education, and their careers and the role of technology in the communication process.

The authors, experienced in the teaching and management of the basic course, believe that communication is about connecting, linking, sharing, participating, bonding, coupling, or joining with others. This text uses student-oriented scenarios, exercises and examples, as well as the authors' conversational style, to draw students into the book and motivate them to learn and understand the basic principles of communication. An integrated emphasis on technology — both in the text itself and in the supplements package — helps students learn about its relationship to communication.

  • “Making Connections” boxes present short vignettes or scenarios that help students use their critical thinking skills to make connections between the foundations of communication theory and real-life situations.
  • A sensitivity to gender and cultural differences encourages better communication and stronger connections.
  • Thorough, thought-provoking, systematic, and straightforward explanations of basic communication principles combined with a lively and interesting writing style make the material in this text accessible to students.
  • Updated student-oriented examples offer students real-life communication situations from which to learn.
  • Sample informative and persuasive speeches (some available on video) are annotated with the authors' comments to help students plan their own speeches.
  • Chapter opening vignettes introduce concepts covered in the chapter with real-life scenarios, immediately bringing the material home to students.
  • Numerous pedagogical aids, including chapter opening quotations, chapter objectives, boldface key terms, summaries, end-of-chapter discussion questions, and notes, aid in student learning and retention of the material.

  • TECHNOLOGY ADVANTAGE— Increased coverage of technology illustrates how technology-related issues impact students' communication (a “Making Connections” box in each chapter devoted to Internet activities further illustrates this impact).
  • The expanded supplements package also reflects the increased attention to technology and its impact on communication.
  • Expanded coverage of diversity and ethics gives students more insight into these two key topics, which affect all of their connections with others.
  • Additional “Guidelines” boxes offer tips for applying skills to real communication situations.
  • Streamlined boxed feature program combines the former “Linking Communication to Your Life” boxes and the “Making Connections” boxes to provide a stronger, more clearly defined pedagogical aid.
  • Updated Appendix on employment interviewing helps students prepare for their future careers.
  • Updated research-based content uses the latest information available to give students the most current insight into the field.
  • New coverage on social facilitation, dialetical theory, exchange theory, disclosure and privacy, team building, and leadership styles provide students with information about additional communication concepts.

All chapters conclude with “Summary,” “Key Terms,” “Discussion Starters,” and “Notes.”
