This economical paperback text is theoretically balanced, offers global perspectives, shows how sociology is applied to real problems, and contains a built-in study guide.

This introduction to sociology uses the three major theoretical perspectives—functionalist, conflict, and interactionist—as tools for examining the social world. The author uses illuminating examples to show how society works and how human behavior is shaped by cultural, structural, and institutional forces. As in previous editions, the Sixth Edition also integrates two other themes that reflect contemporary trends in sociology. The first is a reemergence of interest in how sociological knowledge can be applied to social problems or to helping people improve their lives. The second is the recognition that societies and cultures are becoming increasingly diverse and interdependent.

  • Chapters open with a set of “Myths and Facts” to show that much of what people believe about social life is either wrong or oversimplified.
  • A boxed feature called “Other Worlds, Other Ways” illustrates sociological concepts and issues in the context of societies and cultures around the world.
  • “Applying Sociology” boxes in each chapter show how sociological theory and research not only lead to greater understanding, but often guide the search for solutions to societal and personal problems as well.
  • Every chapter ends with a comprehensive Study and Review section.
  • Every key term in the text is defined at first point of use.
  • Learning objectives are included with every major section in the text.

  • Features a larger trim size and new page design.
  • Study and Review sections at the end of chapters have been completely revised and expanded. All material is now organized around the headings for major sections in the chapter.
  • Includes more practice tests and types of questions—including matching, multiple choice, true-false, concept completion, critical thinking, and questions that test understanding of tables and figures in the book.
  • New PowerPoint lecture presentation for instructors are available online.

All chapters conclude with “Summary,” “Study and Review,” and “For Further Reading.”
