New edition available
This item has been replaced by Seeing Anthropology: Cultural Anthropology Through Film (with Ethnographic Film Clips DVD), 4/E.

Seeing Anthropology continues to be the only cultural anthropology text available that allows for easy integration of ethnographic films into the introductory cultural anthropology course.

This text truly incorporates films within the text by blending textbook content with fourteen ethnographic film clips that are put in the hands of students. More flexible ordering options are available with the new edition (See New to this Edition section below).

One reviewer says, “The greatest strengths of this text are its unique and skillful use of film clips to enhance student learning…I can think of no better way to extend student learning in anthropology than the use of films, and there is no one more qualified to select and present anthropological films than the author of this book.”

  • Each film is carefully selected to illustrate the subject of the chapter it accompanies.
  • “Focus Culture Overview” boxes in each chapter present an in-depth account of a culture that emphasizes the topic discussed in the chapter. Each “Focus Culture” box is accompanied by a locator map.
  • “Seeing Anthropology” boxes in each chapter give an in-depth look at the related film clip with set-up questions for the student to answer after watching the clip.
  • Features the readable, personal writing style of the preeminent authority on ethnographic film, Karl Heider.
  • “Doing Anthropology” boxes include quick exercises that can be done at home and engage students in active consideration of the issues at hand.
  • Teaches students how to view an ethnographic film.
  • Comes with an accompanying Instructor's Manual and Test Bank that provides a complete description of each film on the videotape, additional films, and invaluable teaching tips based on the author's 30+ years of teaching film.

  • New ordering options! The ethnographic film clips are now available on both VHS and CD-ROM.* Instructors may choose the format most appropriate for their students or split their textbook order to offer both options for students. Instructors may also order the textbook alone. Contact your publisher's representative about which option is ideal for you. (*Note: The CD-ROM contains “mpeg” files; this is not a DVD.)
  • “Hollywood-Style Anthropology,” a new box at the end of each chapter, provides additional Western fiction film or television examples including “Moonstruck,” “Medicine Man,” and “Mr. Baseball.” This new feature brings to life for students how common it is for popular films to grapple with anthropological concepts and problems.
  • Chapter 14 now includes greatly expanded material on medical anthropology including acute and chronic pain, menopause, immigrant health care, and the anthropology of HIV/AIDS.
  • An entirely new section on food had been added to the consumption chapter (Ch. 7).
  • The “Press Watch: Headline Anthropology” feature has been updated to include only references from 2000 and later. These real-life news clippings help students appreciate how often cultural anthropology and its concerns appear in the daily news.
  • Each chapter now opens with “Ethnography in Stone,” a photo of a bas relief, carved in stone, from Borobudur in Central Java and Angkor Wat in present-day Cambodia. Most of the carved images represent theological, mythological, or dynastic events and accounts, and in the backgrounds of these reliefs one can see a remarkable wealth of everyday life.
  • The film clip “Number Our Days,” judged too short to be useful by users, has been dropped from this edition.

Each chapter concludes with a “Chapter Summary,” “Key Terms,” “Questions to Think About,” and “Suggestions for Further Reading.”
