Introduction to Behavioral Research Methods shows students how to conceptualize questions, measure variables, design studies, and analyze data.

After chapters that introduce behavioral science, the text deals with the four basic approaches to behavioral research: descriptive research, correlational research, experimental research, and quasi-experimental research.

Chapters on research ethics and scientific writing (including the most recent version of APA style) round out the book. Throughout each chapter, boxes on “Developing Your Research Skills” and “Behavioral Research Case Study” provide practical examples and pique student interest.

The Research Edition provides margin icons that guide students to the Research Navigator site.

  • Discusses uses of both deductive and inductive approaches to answering questions, which readdresses the historical imbalance in favor of deductive approaches to the exclusion of inductive ones.
  • Introduces the model of science as knowledge “filter” that slowly sifts out worthless ideas, giving students a compelling, visual metaphor of how science works over time.
  • Discusses pros and cons of Internet-based research.

  • Includes a new Chapter 5, “Descriptive Research.”
  • Chapter 15 on scientific writing incorporates the latest version of APA style.
  • New examples of Behavioral Research Case Studies, which include archival research, meta-analysis, observational research, content analysis and sampling.
  • Enhanced discussion of computer analysis, statistical power, and interpreting interactions.
  • New Research Navigator icons point students to the R.N. Research site.

All chapters begin with a chapter outline and conclude with “Summary,” “Key Terms,” “Questions for Review,” and “Questions for Discussion.”
