New Directions in Writing is a student-oriented writing text developed to help students meet the writing requirements of the real world, as well as of the college classroom.

  • “Writers Write” contributions from real-life writers in action, reinforce the thesis for the section in which they appear. They demonstrate how skills such as audience awareness, focus of intent, attention to style, and productive integration of research look in action.
  • “Quick Lists” sum up key points and can be used as rubrics for assessing student understanding in an area.
  • Both student and professional examples are included throughout the text. The goal is let students hear the voices of their peers as well as those who have succeeded in fields in which they, too, may aspire to succeed.
  • “Practice” activities are integrated throughouteach section. Both individual and group activities that get students involved by offering the opportunity to write and learn about issues that are important to them.
  • “Writers on the Job” sections in Part IV encompass the thinking and writing practices of particular fields: business in the social sciences, and in the health sciences.
  • Photos open each new section and serve to visually stimulate users as well as act as springboards for writing.
  • “The Hub”— which takes its title from a common name for university student centers—is a “writer's grammar.” Its goal is to get students thinking about grammar and usage as a series of rhetorical, writerly, reader-oriented choices rather than as a systematic memorization of rules. The topics included were suggested in polls of teachers and crafted primarily by students in Basic Writing II and III courses from examples out of their own writing.
