Culture and Context is a bridge-level developmental writing textbook that teaches the basics of essay writing through meaningful connections to popular culture and college life.

The book emphasizes the integral link between reading and writing by providing a multitude of readings related to popular and campus culture.

Each chapter in the book's first three parts opens with a professional reading that serves to stimulate student interest and to provide a model for analysis and imitation, and Part IV presents additional readings on a variety of popular culture topics. Connected writing assignments ask students to respond to the readings and to reflect on and investigate their own cultures and those of others. These assignments aim to help them understand their contexts and to see their lives and interests—where they are now—as subjects worth writing about. The writing process emphasizes context, too, by prompting students to be aware of topic, audience, and purpose as they proceed through three carefully laid out steps: ready, write, revise. A series of worksheets and checklists help students.

  • Focus on culture and context—on popular culture, classroom and campus concerns, and college life—as sources for student writing and reading. The book is geared toward ideas that students can access and have the motivation to develop.
  • The writing process is described in three steps—ready, write, revise. Chapters on strategies and types of writing examine how these steps can be adapted to many writing situations.
  • The book is rhetorically organized. The strategies of narration, process, description, definition and classification, comparison and contrast, cause and effect, and persuasion are each developed as a chapter—length presentation.
  • A section of readings in popular and campus culture provides additional opportunities for varied and stimulating writing assignments. Altogether, the book includes thirty—two high—interest readings.
  • Almost 300 exercises give students practice in selecting and developing topics, organizing their material, drafting, critiquing, and revising. Some exercises prompt critical thinking and group discussions, test reading and writing skills, and check knowledge of grammar and mechanics, but the vast majority involve writing.
  • Collaborative writing is emphasized by the inclusion of at least one collaborative activity in every exercise set as well as a recurring feature called “Writing with Others.”
  • Fourteen student samples show a student at work on various writing assignments, including various stages of the writing process as well as self—critiquing and peer review. The samples are realistic renditions of writings from developmental writing classes. The student using this textbook works alongside the sample student to produce an essay.
  • Grammar, punctuation, and other “mechanics” of writing are presented in a review section, with skills drills and editing exercises, that students can consult and use as necessary.
