This exciting, new text provides students with a superior grounding in economic theory and domestic politics. It de-emphasizes the traditional schools of thought in IPE in favor of those theories that reflect today's research.

Oatley provides undergraduates with the necessary background in history and economic theory that they need to understand the core elements of contemporary international political economy. The book’s approach is based on four assumptions: that IPE is best understood through a choice-centered framework; individual and group economic policy preferences are shaped by anticipated income consequences; individuals and groups are rational; and institutions both help individuals solve collective action problems and shape the distribution of the benefits from collective action.

  • Instead of emphasizing the three traditional schools of IPE—mercantilism, liberalism, and Marxism—this book develops an analytical framework based on the interaction between interests and institutions and applies it to each issue area examined. This approach follows contemporary IPE scholarship and allows for a number of distinct explanations covering a large number of countries—all of which start from the same point: governments' foreign economic policies reflect the interaction between societal interests and political institutions.
  • Includes more extensive discussions of economic concepts and theories than most IPE books to give undergraduate students with little economic knowledge the background they need.
  • Includes more extensive discussion of domestic politics than most IPE books to help students understand this important aspect of IPE—the domestic politics of trade and exchange rate policy.
