Writing Keystones —the second book in a brief new rhetoric series from Longman—is a mini rhetoric for the essay-level developmental writing course.

Writing Keystones explores critical thinking, reading, and essay writing. It breaks down specific essays with extensive annotations to take students through the drafting, revising, and proofreading processes step by step.

Writing Keystones helps students think concretely and consciously about what is meaningful to them in writing and about why essay writing is so important academically. It emphasizes the revision process so that students learn to get their preliminary ideas out before organizing and expanding them (thus alleviating some of the fears that accompany essay writing). This book also shows the differences among pre-writing/invention, drafting, revising for organization and content development, revising sentences for clarity and expression, and proofreading. In addition, it walks students through various aspects of the research process, helping them learn to evaluate sources for credibility and to be imaginative about finding an enormous variety of credible resources available to them.

Keystones also provides extensive and detailed formatting guidelines for setting up MLA- and APA-style bibliographies, offering step-by-step instructions for many types of bibliographic entries. Modes of discourse are discussed in terms of how they relate to one another and work together to form effective essays; in addition, analysis and persuasion are discussed in great detail as two of the most common essay forms students will encounter in college.
