Communication: Embracing Difference is the first hybrid communication text to stress the importance of understanding and celebrating difference as a means to becoming a more effective communicator.

This new hybrid text targets both mainstream students and non-traditional students who range widely in age, ethnicity, race, religion, sexual orientation, social roles, and socio-economic status. Many of these students are parents; many work full time or even hold more than one job; many are the first in their family to go to college.

Communication: Embracing Difference uses examples and an overall approach that are designed to resonate with the diverse student population that makes up so many campuses today. The text describes basic communication theory in everyday, non-technical terms and offers students an abundance of opportunities to analyze, understand, practice, and apply skills to real-life situations presented in the book and encountered in their own daily lives. Communication: Embracing Difference emphasizes the practical application of communication skills in interpersonal, small group, and public settings.

  • Emphasis on understanding and appreciating difference is integrated into every aspect of the text.
  • “Ethics in Communication” boxes follow up on the ethical dilemmas posed in chapter-opening vignettes, helping students identify and understand the ethical choices people make in a variety of life circumstances.
  • “Communication and Technology” boxes report how technological advances have changed the way people communicate. Topics like e-mail and computer-mediated communication, using the Internet for research, the role of presentational software in public speaking, and working in virtual teams are discussed.
  • Three types of activities help students apply what they are learning:
    • Self-assessment activities allow students to analyze, understand, and refine their own communication skills.

    • Skill-building activities give students the opportunity to develop and practice the skills taught and apply them to real life situations.

    • Critical thinking activities let students analyze the communication of others in a variety of settings and situations and then strategize about these communication challenges.

  • Chapter-opening scenarios describe real-life communication situations students face every day. These stories not only resonate with students' lives at work, home, and school; they also highlight the increasing diversity of student populations across the country.
  • Additional Pedagogy—
    • Learning objectives help students focus on overall concepts, theories, and skills discussed the chapter.

    • Checklists in each chapter summarize the most important theories or skills.

    • Chapter summaries review the main themes of each chapter

    • Review questions help students reflect upon the chapter material and can be also used for study guides, quizzes, or exams.

    • Glossary of terms provides a handy reference to key words and phrases.

Each chapter contains “Ethics in Communication” and “Communication and Technology” and conclude with “Summary” and “Review Questions.”
