Selby's Essential College English is an excellent grammar workbook that provides a complete, clear treatment of the rules of grammar and punctuation.
Incorporating a friendly and engaging tone throughout, the authors focus on the traditional principles of basic, sentence-level grammar and usage. Each chapter begins with a practice "Find the Error" activity, progresses to lessons and numerous exercises to reinforce each lesson, and concludes with further review and editing tests to help students retain what they have learned in each chapter. This text also provides a greater emphasis on writing as well as journal and writing assignments at the end of each chapter.
- Concise, clear explanation. All principles and rules of grammar are explained in clear, straightforward language, which helps students understand the content of each chapter and also keeps them motivated.
- “Writer's Tips.” Provides students with useful writing advice.
- Writing assignments. Two assignments in each chapter give students more practice with "real" writing assignments.
- Boxed “Grammar Rules” makes it easier for students to find and refer to important grammar rules presented throughout each chapter.
- Checklists, which give a summary of important and complex grammar rules, have been inserted throughout the text to give quick reference points for students
- Includes a large number and variety of exercises to allow professors to adjust to suit student comprehension level.
- New! "Find the Error." This feature includes a news headline, brief advertisement, or excerpt that contains a grammatical error that students must identify. The error is linked to the lesson presented in that chapter.
- More exercises. The authors have added more exercises so that students can effectively practice what they learn in each chapter. These new exercises are drawn from high-interest topics that are relevant to college students.
- New! “Focus on Writing.” This new feature, located at the end of each chapter, discusses a specific aspect of writing—such as organization, coherence, and revision.
- Increased coverage of sentence structure, sentence variety, and sentence combining.
- New! Chapter 18 covers spelling practice and stylistic elements.
