With an emphasis on expressing ideas and presenting information in clear, well-organized paragraphs and essays, Checkpoints effectively integrates instruction on writing and reading skills with grammar coverage throughout.

Readings offer examples of effective writing strategies and ideas for students to incorporate into their own writing.

Chapter 1 contains a detailed overview of the writing process, from prewriting strategies through revision methods.

“Writing Resources” at the end of the text include additional exercises, writing prompts, a glossary of grammar terms, tips for ESL students and suggestions for using computers and the Internet.

Readings by diverse authors and additional ESL coverage for non-native speakers enhance the text's multicultural emphasis.

Questions before each reading ask students to think about prior knowledge of the topic. “Checking Meaning” and “Checking Ideas” follow-up questions help students develop critical thinking skills.

Students review grammar principles in the context of writing issues in every chapter.

Students learn proper grammar in the context of their own writing with manageable, brief and cumulative exercises such as “Spotchecks,” covering specific details of a topic; “Doublechecks,” combining several “Spotcheck” topics; “Editing Checks,” covering all aspects of the topic; and a “Checkpoint Quiz,” reviewing the entire section.

New! “Writing Topic Banks” in each chapter give students additional practice beyond the major writing assignment already designed for that chapter. Each Writing Topic Bank includes three different kinds of writing assignments: a print-based assignment, an “exploring on the Internet” assignment, and a “writing about the media” assignment. These assignments are designed to appeal to student interests (sports, movies, newspapers, magazines, the Internet, music, and popular culture).

New! Two new Appendixes. “Using Outside Sources in Writing” models current MLA style, including citation entries for books, magazines, newspapers and Websites. A discussion of plagiarism is also included. “Revising and Editing a Paragraph” demonstrates the process a student goes through to write more effective paragraphs; it includes a brief checklist for revising and editing, along with four drafts of a paragraph with the student writer's observations in between.
