This item has been replaced by Between Worlds: A Reader Rhetoric and Handbook, 6/E.

This unique composition resource features a thematically-organized collection of readings, a modes-based rhetoric, and a concise handbook.

This unusually constructed text opens with more than 60 readings—essays, stories, poems, and a play, all centered around the theme of “in-between-ness”—being caught between generations, living with diverse cultures, dealing with gender conflicts, and exploring differing perceptions of the self and others. A substantial rhetoric section traces several student papers-in-progress through the prewriting, drafting, revising, and editing processes and covers the rhetorical strategies using student and professional essays as models. A research chapter with information on using and documenting sources in MLA and APA style and a brief handbook section are also included. Between Worlds emphasizes the importance of reading, critical thinking, and analysis in all college writing assignments.

  • Diverse forms, styles, and perspectives are reflected in the readings which range from short, focused pieces to longer, more complex forms, including numerous editorials, commentaries, expository essays, arguments, and literary selections.
  • The rhetoric provides accessible coverage of the rhetorical modes and the most commonly assigned writing projects—summary, narration, definition, evaluative response, cause and effect, comparison and contrast, argument, analysis, essay exams, and the research paper.
  • Sample student papers in various stages of the writing process—from prewriting to final draft—appear in each chapter of the rhetoric section.
  • The brief handbook section focuses on students' most common errors and frequently-confused words; marginal editing symbols appear inside the back cover.
  • Pedagogy after each reading includes “Thinking About the Text” questions that discuss content, audience, and purpose;“Writing from the Text” essay prompts; and “Connecting with Other Texts” assignments that connect to other readings in the text and/or additional material on the Internet.

  • Thirty-two new readings discuss timely topics, such as Internet dating, Muslim women and the burkha, and patriotism and family attachments in the wake of September 11.
  • New selections by renowned authors are featured in this edition, including Anna Quindlen, Joan Didion, George Orwell, Barbara Ehrenreich, S.I. Hayakawa, Carol Tavris, Clifford Stoll, Arlie Hochschild, and Jonathon Atler.
  • A new chapter (10) on analysis in the rhetoric section examines process analysis, problem analysis, and subject analysis, and a new section focused on biographical analysis that allows students to write about a person they find relevant to their lives.
  • Ten complete student papers—four new to this edition—model different methods for developing essays including narration, definition, and biographical analysis.
