Students then put these skills to practice on thematically-linked essays on provocative topics in the readings chapters. A stronger focus on argumentation addresses the trend found in today's composition classrooms.

Part I presents concise yet complete discussions of the skills of summary, synthesis, and critique to help students write source-based papers across the disciplines.

Discussions of argument in Chapters 2 and 3 introduce and adapt the Toulmin approach to the kinds of readings that students will encounter in Part II.

Boxes on reading critically appear throughout, as well as brief exercises for students to practice reading and writing critically in a controlled environment.

Chapter 4, “Cyberspace and Identity: The E-Mail Revolution,” gathers readings that explore the way e-mail enhances and distracts us from our daily work.
