Now in its tenth edition, this market-leading language reader continues to feature thought-provoking readings that explore the various interconnections between language and American society.

For more than 25 years, this engaging reader has challenged students to critically examine how language affects and constructs culture and how culture constructs and affects language. This tenth edition maintains the integrity of past editions while reflecting the new and fascinating language issues that exist in today's culture. Provocative selections are organized around nine major language areas, and then broken into stimulating sub-themes like political correctness, hate speech, language and the presidency, and censorship on campus, inviting students to debate current social and cultural issues that are inseparable from language.

Chapter themes, such as “Censorship and Free Speech” (Ch. 7) and “Language of the Mass Media and Advertising” (Ch. 6), reflect the wide spectrum of language issues affecting our contemporary culture.

A headnote containing useful thematic and biographical information precedes each reading, and compelling review questions follow each essay, while “Making Connections” exercises, and library and Internet research questions conclude each chapter.

“Exploring the Language of Visuals” sections throughout provide graphics such as photographs, cartoons, posters, print ads, email messages, signs, and a book cover for students to analyze critically and discuss.

Most chapters feature case studies focusing on particular language issues. For example Chapter 1 concentrates on the historical voice of women, while Chapter 4 focuses on the humor in cartoons.

Two new sections in Chapter 3, “Politically Speaking,” include a timely discussion of “Language and the Presidency” and a case study touching on the events of September 11.

A new Chapter 4, “The Art of Conversation,” explores language and gender issues and language and social interaction.

A new Chapter 8, “Political Correctness and Hate Speech,” includes a new section on “Words That Hurt.”

Updated visuals appear throughout the text, emphasizing the importance of nonverbal communication in today's culture.
