This best-selling collection of readings explores the theme of dreams, the imagination, and the heart connected to the reasoning mind.

Supporting a creative approach to the teaching of writing, Dreams and Inward Journeys presents a rich mixture of reflective essays, stories, and poems. Thematically focused on dream-related topics, the readings chapters discuss such topics as memory, myths/fairy tales, obsessions, sexuality, gender roles, the other, technology, popular culture, nature, and spirituality. Readings move from the personal to the abstract, encouraging students to investigate new ways of seeing and understanding themselves and their relationship to fundamental social issues and universal human concerns. Featuring a dual thematic and rhetorical organization, each chapter also provides practical writing advice on a specific rhetorical pattern, strategies for writing, critical thinking questions, and two to three student sample papers. Beautiful, stimulating art opens each chapter to support the theme and provide prompts for prewriting.

  • Notable authors like Maya Angelou, Anne Lamott, Gabriel García Marquez, Maxine Hong Kingston, E.M. Forster, Alice Walker, Sigmund Freud, and John Updike make this an impressive, as well as unique, collection of readings.
  • A vast array of literary genres is presented, including essays, poems, and stories.
  • Chapters open with both a rhetorical and thematic introduction; for example, Chapter 4 compares traditional and modern myths and offers writing guidelines for developing a comparison/contrast essay.
  • Two to three student essays appear at the end of each chapter to begin an exploration of the chapter theme and to model the rhetorical strategy introduced at the beginning of the chapter.
  • Every selection concludes with “Connection” questions that interrelate the piece with other readings and themes in the text.
  • “Journal Prompts” encourage informal and expressive writing as a prelude to academic assignments and research projects.

  • Thirty-six new and noteworthy readings include Virginia Woolf, “Professions for Women,” David Sedaris, “I Like Guys,” and Erich Fromm, “Symbolic Language.”
  • A New Chapter 2, “Visions of Nature,” features pieces by Jon Krakauer, Farley Mowat, Donovan Webster, and Loren Eisley.
  • All new Chapter 9, “Visions of Spirituality,” highlights the work of Thomas Moore, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Annie Dillard.
  • Formerly covered in two separate chapters, reading and writing are now combined in Chapter 1, “Discovering Ourselves in Writing and Reading,” to draw a clearer relationship between these interrelated processes.
  • Each reading selection is accompanied by two topic-related Web site URL's that help students continue researching on that topic.
  • Provocative and highly symbolic art connected to the theme opens each chapter.
