English

Expectations is a collection of popular readings for developmental writing students, with questions, discussion topics, and assignments to develop writing, reading, and critical thinking skills.

The forty readings from magazines, newspapers, textbooks, and other contemporary books illustrate a broad range of writing styles and techniques, and are organized by the following themes: Social and Cultural Issues, Media and Popular Culture, Fitness and Health, Education and Career, The Outdoors, and Values and Choices. Within each theme, readings are organized in order of difficulty, with easier readings first.

• Multicultural. The readings reflect the multicultural and pluralistic nature of our society, including articles that feature the Japanese-American experience, gender issues in the workplace, disabled athletes, and the experience of an African American midwife in the deep South.
• Strategies for Active Reading. A short introduction focuses on previewing, audience and purpose, main idea, discovering meaning through context clues, making inferences, evaluating for logic and bias, reviewing, and reflecting on the reading.
• High-interest Readings. Expectations features a wide variety of readings on topics of interest and value to today's students. Selections are chosen from magazines, newspapers, textbooks, and other contemporary books, including some fiction.
• Thematically Organized. The readings are organized by the following themes: Cultural and Social Issues, Education and Career, Media and Popular Culture, Fitness and Health, Nature and The Outdoors, and Values and Choices.
• Prereading questions provide a conceptual framework by asking students to start thinking about the topics and issues in the reading.
• Vocabulary. Vocabulary list for preview or quick look-up provides simple and concise definitions of difficult or unusual vocabulary in each reading.
• Topics for Discussion or Journal Writing. A selection of creative, imaginative, and personal response topics to stimulate class discussion and informal writing.

• 11 new readings touching on a broad spectrum of American life, including works from such well known authors as Maya Angelou and Momaday.
• A new reading unit on Values and Choices covers diverse topics, from cellphone use and privacy issues, to gossip and the values reflected in the choices we make about gossiping, to a thought-provoking Newsweek articles on the values reflected by young Americans "Choosing Virginity", and more. 
• Expanded introductions to many of the readings include more background detail on the author and the article.
