Providing 24 in-depth case studies, the new edition of this useful supplement for international relations and foreign policy courses gives students the opportunity to apply concepts and analyze events.

The text provides a coherent narrative background in international relations so students understand important developments in history. Although the emphasis is on twentieth and twenty-first century events, most cases stretch back to the Middle Ages to give current developments the proper historical framework. This text will allow students to make sense of modern-day problems and better understand key concepts in the study of international relations.

  • Web addresses at the end of each chapter and in the bibliography allow students to directly access government policy papers, current economic statistics, the activities of special interest groups and on-going academic research on particular topics.
  • “Questions to Consider” at the end of each chapter help students consider the implications of the material and relate it to more general concepts and questions in international relations. It also helps them understand how the material relates to their own lives.
  • Maps and charts throughout text help those with no background on the historical event. This visual material is organized in an accessible way: key events are highlighted in chronologies, key locations are displayed on maps, and key data is summarized in tables.

  • Each case has been updated where applicable to present the most current (and correct) information possible.
  • Two cases are new to this edition: chapter on the Kyoto Protocol (collective goods) and Al-Qaeda (terrorism).
  • Improved pedagogy now includes a quick, ready-reference chronology of events at the beginning of each chapter; biographies of “key actors” (a list of the central personalities in the case history to help clarify the narrative); debate topics at the end of each chapter pose a central question followed by three “pro” and three “con” statements intended to facilitate lively discussions; and expanded definitions throughout the chapter now give each term a 500-word description with more references to the literature and more explicit linkage to the historical material.

Each chapter begins with “Key Actors” and “Chronology.” Each chapter concludes with “Conclusion,” “Debate Topic,” and “Questions to Consider.”

List of Figures, Maps, and Tables.
