This truly global multicultural reader features 63 contemporary selections by internationally acclaimed authors from 32 countries.

The compelling readings explore cultural differences in relation to race, class, gender, and nationality, challenging students to compare their experiences with those of others in radically different cultural circumstances. Eight thematic chapters explore cultural perspectives on human experiences around the globe: family life, adolescent relationships, gender roles, work and identity, race and class conflict, the struggles of individuals against governments, the immigrant experience, and a new chapter on social customs, rituals, and entertainment.

  • Seventeen distinguished short stories are integrated with 47 non-fiction selections, including diaries, essays, interviews, autobiographies, memoirs, and a comic monologue.
  • The general introduction teaches critical reading, including the reading journal and reprints Edward T. Hall's “Hidden Culture” as a sample professional essay for students to annotate.
  • Extensive apparatus includes chapter introductions, biographical sketches, end-of-selection questions, and end-of-chapter questions called “Connecting Cultures,” which make rich comparisons and connections between selections.
  • The rich sampling of accounts by writers who are native to the cultures they describe allows students to “hear” authentic voices rather than filtered journalistic reports.
  • Appendices include a geographical and a rhetorical index, a pronunciation guide, and a map of the world highlighting the countries mentioned in the text.
  • The revised Instructor's Manual offers teaching suggestions for each selection, bibliographies of books and periodicals, a guide to teaching short fiction and writing about films, a filmography, and a list of online resources for each writer in this anthology.

  • Twenty-five selections are new to this edition, many of them not previously anthologized, representing a global community of authors.
  • Six new short works of fiction, written by authors ranging from Kate Chopin to Tayeb Salih, represent a wide variety of cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Half of the authors represented in this edition are women.
  • U.S. culture is viewed by several newly represented American writers, including humorist George Carlin, firefighter Dennis Smith, and journalist Barbara Ehrenreich.
  • Pre-reading prompts before each selection alert students to both cultural and rhetorical aspects in the piece to come.
  • A new organization within chapters arranges non-fiction pieces alphabetically by author, followed by short fiction, also arranged alphabetically.

* Denotes selections new to this edition. Each chapter concludes with “Connecting Cultures” questions.
