This brief, engaging reader provides readable selections organized by both rhetorical pattern and theme.

Featuring more than ninety brief selections, this accessible compilation features a dual organization with readings that illustrate a specific rhetorical pattern while exploring a relevant theme. Selections range from professional essays to annotated student essays, short stories, poems, a cartoon, four-color fine art, advertisements, and photographs. Each chapter is enriched by an introduction that provides specific guidelines for understanding the rhetorical pattern illustrated, vocabulary work, detailed questions for each reading, and topics for writing.

Dual rhetorical and thematic organization gives instructors the option of stressing pattern or theme and allows them to compare and contrast the selections for both content and rhetorical structure.

Rhetorical patterns are organized by increasing difficulty, giving instructors and students the opportunity to work on the basics of good writing before moving to more demanding structures.

Reading selections are brief and accessible while chapter themes start with the individual and move to larger societal, political, and moral issues.

Readings represent a diverse selection of authors and a variety of literary genres—essays, short stories, poems, fables, and visual images.

An unparalleled number of critical thinking questions follow each selection, stressing the process of reading as both understanding content and drawing inferences about that content.

Chapter introductions provide detailed guidelines for writing each rhetorical pattern; vital information is presented in list form to enhance accessibility.

Twenty-eight of the seventy-five written works are new and represent a greater diversity of authorship.

New readings in the chapters on argument (Ch. 10) and media issues (Ch. 5), maintain a focus on current issues, such as affirmative action for college admissions, immigration, and the environmental movement.

More visuals throughout, some within essays, provide opportunities for students to use visual media as a springboard to writing.

“Writing Focus” sections in each chapter offer guidance on a key writing issue, i.e. writing summaries, using punctuation, and varying sentences for effect.

Two pre-reading questions for each reading prepare students to read more critically.

“Making Connections” assignments at the end of each chapter now ask students to explore links between the selections and information on the Web, in addition to the connections between readings in the text.

Each chapter concludes with “Making Connections” and “Topics and Guidelines for Writing.”
