This brief guide teaches students how to read rhetorically and write about what they have read with rhetorical insight.

Offering concise yet thorough treatment of academic reading and writing in college, Reading Rhetorically shows students how to analyze texts by recognizing their strategies and genre conventions, and how to use other texts when writing about research. Two important features distinguish this reader from others: (1) its emphasis on reading as an interactive process of composing meaning, and (2) its emphasis on academic writing as a process in which writers engage with other texts. This brief rhetoric teaches students how to see texts positioned in a conversation with other texts, how to recognize their bias or perspective, and how to analyze texts for both content and method.

In-depth discussions of reading processes show students how skilled academic readers construct the meaning of a text; chapters 2-8 offer students insight into the nature of reading and practical strategies for reading.

Part II provides practice in “listening” to texts through annotating, mapping idea structure, summarizing, descriptive outlining, and writing a rhetorical précis, as well as in “questioning” texts through analysis of rhetorical appeals, language, and ideology.

Part III provides an overview of the writing process and the special demands of academic writing.

Making research a genuine act of inquiry, the text presents research as a process of rhetorical reading in which students develop research questions and evaluate sources.

Shows students how to incorporate source material responsibly into their papers and how to write effective summaries, paraphrases, analyses, and critiques of other texts.

“Building a Citation” Appendix presents citation as integral to rhetorical effectiveness and provides models for print and electronic sources in an extensive list of sample MLA citations.
