With free chapter tests at the end of the book this Brief Study Edition is sure to improve student grades while the text's highly lauded politics matters theme engages them in the study of our government.

The Study Edition continues to provide free chapter tests at the end of the book and offers two new exciting features in this edition. A new “Issues of the Times” feature presents students with articles from The New York Times about controversies facing our nation today. Students are asked to think critically about the issues, and encouraged to see how politics and the news media affect them. New “Get Connected” end-of-chapter exercises ask students to get connected to their political system through the Internet by investigating hot political issues and evaluating their own positions on these topics. These new features are extensions of the text's long-standing politics matters theme. Through a variety of text features and a strong emphasis on public policy, Government in America shows students the impact that government has on their daily lives, encouraging them to see how vitally important it is to study, understand, and participate in our political system.

  • Free practice tests at the end of the book enable students to review concepts and practice for exams.
  • Optional Solutions Manual package. To give your students the Study Edition plus free Solutions Manual, use package ISBN: 0-321-20067-5.
  • “Making a Difference” boxes throughout text present the stories and experiences of individuals involved in politics, showing the impact individuals can have on government when they get involved.
  • “How You Can Make a Difference” boxes build off the “Making a Difference” boxes by giving students explicit, step-by-step advice about how they, too, can get involved and effect change in our system.
  • “Career Profiles” at the end of each chapter introduce students to a career opportunity available in politics and government, complete with job description, qualifications, and salary ranges. A profile of a real person with that job is also featured, helping students to see the real-world applications of what they're studying.
  • “You Are the Policymaker” boxes throughout the text put students in the role of policymaker, asking them to analyze an issue and reach a policy decision.

  • New “Issues of the Times” feature from the New York Times ask students to think critically about the news and how it affects them. These 2-page spreads are accompanied by an introduction, overlaying pedagogy emphasizing key points in the article, and critical reading questions to guide students through the issues of the day. In essence, a free New York Times Reader in every copy!
  • NEW “Get Connected” exercises. These chapter-ending boxes underscore the politics matter theme by asking students to investigate current political issues on the web and then answer critical thinking questions about the information they have found. The exercises are designed to work well as homework assignments and demonstrate key points in each chapter.
  • A revised Chapter 1, “Introducing Government in America”: with new sections on “Using the Internet” and “Connecting with the Times” which provide students with a guide to using today's popular media to encourage both critical reading and getting involved in today's political world.
  • Thoroughly updated uoverage: includes the results of the 2002 midterm elections and the 2003 Iraq War.
  • TECHNOLOGY ADVANTAGE—Free access to LongmanParticipate.com 2.0, included in every new copy of the text! Today, he is one of the countrys leading scholars of the presidency and has authored dozens of articles and written or edited 16 books on American politics and public policy making, including Changing Their Minds? The Failure of the Bully Pulpit; At the Margins: Presidential Leadership of Congress; Presidential Approval; Presidential Leadership; National Security and the U.S. Constitution, and Implementing Public Policy. Professor Edwards has served as president of the Presidency Research Section of the American Political Science Association and is editor of Presidential Studies Quarterly. He has received the Decoration for Distinguished Civilian Service from the U.S. Army and is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. A frequent speaker at universities around the country, he often lectures abroad as well. When not writing, speaking, or advising, he prefers to spend time with his wife, Carmella, sailing, skiing, scuba diving, traveling, or attending art auctions.

Professor Wattenberg has lectured about American politics on all of the inhabited continents. His travels have led him to become interested in electoral politics around the world. He recently co-edited two books -- one on party systems in the advanced industrialized world, and the other on the recent trend toward mixed-member electoral systems.
