This unusually constructed text opens with more than 60 readings—essays, stories, poems, and a play, all centered around the theme of “in-between-ness”—being caught between generations, living with diverse cultures, dealing with gender conflicts, and exploring differing perceptions of the self and others. The rhetoric provides accessible coverage of the rhetorical modes and the most commonly assigned writing projects—summary, narration, definition, evaluative response, cause and effect, comparison and contrast, argument, analysis, essay exams, and the research paper.

Sample student papers in various stages of the writing process—from prewriting to final draft—appear in each chapter of the rhetoric section.

Pedagogy after each reading includes “Thinking About the Text” questions that discuss content, audience, and purpose;“Writing from the Text” essay prompts; and “Connecting with Other Texts” assignments that connect to other readings in the text and/or additional material on the Internet.
