Description

This practical anthology provides a framework for thinking about moral dilemmas, followed by case studies featuring commentaries from health care and other professionals on a variety of community health care issues.

Moral Dilemmas in Community Healthcare: Cases and Commentary emphasizes the real-life ethical dilemmas community health-care professionals are likely to encounter and gives them real tools for moral reasoning. Featuring the perspectives of nurses, physicians, pharmacists, hospital administrators, ethicists, and lay-persons, as well as legal and policy perspectives, the provocative case studies address everyday health care challenges.

Features

  • Practical case studies discuss the ethical, political, and economical implications of such issues as medical mistakes the obligation to admit them, patients refusing care for religious or financial reasons, health professionals with HIV, employer rights to health information, placebos and truth-telling in clinical trials, responsibility to the non-compliant patient, and life support and whether to end it.

  • Opens with a simple framework for thinking about moral dilemmas and helps students appreciate the ethical complexity of the cases.
  • Twenty-one cases focus on a wide range of community-based dilemmas and are often set in small community hospitals, ancillary health care institutions, and doctors' offices, so that students read cases from settings like those that most health care professionals will work in, and learn about issues that professionals in ordinary health care and ordinary patients face.
  • Cases are followed by commentaries by three or four health-care professionals from a variety of backgrounds, not just doctors and ethicists–including hospital administrators, economists, nurse practitioners, dietitians, pharmacists, alternative care practitioners, and more. Their commentaries offer interesting, varied, and practical perspectives of the issues and show students a wide range of perspectives.
  • Case introductions, written by the editors, highlight three or four salient issues at the heart of the case and explain why these issues are important. Commentaries complement the introductions in their analysis and resolution.
  • Three to five “Further Reflection” questions at the end of each chapter provide a directed and comparative framework for discussion and analysis.
