Description

Dialogues represents argument not as a battle to be won, but as a process of dialogue and deliberation—the exchange of opinions and ideas—among people with different values and perspectives.

Part One contains succinct instruction on analyzing and developing arguments, including critical reading, source documentation, and analyzing visual arguments. Part Two, updated with many new readings addressing current issues, offers a diverse collection of provocative essays from both the popular and scholarly medium. The lucid, lively, and engaging writing addresses students as writers and thinkers, without overwhelming them with unnecessary jargon or theory.

Features

  • In Chapter 1, students are introduced to argument as a process of "Debate,” “Dialogue,” and “Deliberation" and given guidance for evaluating and building arguments through comparing and synthesizing diverse viewpoints.
  • Chapter 2, "Reading Arguments: Thinking Like a Critic," takes students step-by-step through every stage of a critical reading process—from previewing and skimming a reading, through annotating and summarizing, to analyzing, evaluating and arguing with that reading.
  • Integrated sample arguments in Part One exemplify important strategies of argument and give students practice in analyzing the features of good arguments. Thematically connected essays also allow students to compare different strategies and approaches to the same topic.
  • Student essays demonstrating the principles discussed in the chapter show practical applications from a student perspective.
  • Chapter 8, Visual Arguments: Thinking Like an Illustrator,” teaches students the skills necessary to critically examine and interpret the audience, claims, assumptions, and evidence present in visual media including art, advertising, propaganda, editorial cartoons, and charts and graphs.
  • Chapter 9, "Researching Arguments: Thinking Like an Investigator," details specific information and examples of locating, evaluating, and citing print and electronic sources. Three Web sites are analyzed and compared to demonstrate how to determine the viability of information found on the Web.
  • The "Documentation Guide" includes updated student sample research papers in both MLA and APA styles, annotated to highlight important documentation issues. Examples of documentation using electronic sources have also been updated and expanded.

New To This Edition

  • Six new sample student papers in Part One touch on such contemporary issues as—do we need stronger anti-smoking campaign targeting young people (“Offended by the Numbers” by Danise Cavallaro), are the uniforms worn by women on the Olympic beach volleyball teams sexually exploiting these athletes (“Olympic Babes?” by Lee Innes), and should foreign language instruction begin in elementary schools (“Globalization: It’s Elementary” by Amanda Collins).
  • New “Reading the Visual” feature, in each chapter in Part Two, asks students to analyze visual arguments—including photographs, ads, and graphics—connected to the chapter’s theme.
  • Part Two features more than 30 new essays on contemporary issues that matter to students, most of which have been written within the last three years and represent a greater number of minority and women authors.
  • New Chapter 12, “Security and Freedom,” includes critical views of our changing world, alongside discussions of terrorism, privacy, and patriotism.
  • New Chapter 15, College Life,” asks students to consider controversial topics like drinking on college campuses and colleges’ efforts to control such behavior; freedom of speech on campus; and debates over tuition, grade inflation, and undergraduate expectations of the job market.
  • Two new Casebooks on “Juvenile Crime” and “Church and State,” provides students an opportunity to explore—through research, collaborative activities, and writing assignments–two contemporary issues.
  • Updated Chapter 11, “Gender Issues” includes a new cluster of readings on gender and sports.
  • Updated Chapter 14, “What Makes a Family” addresses recent trends in gay marriage and partnering, and features a new group of readings on adoption and adoption rights.
  • Updated Chapter 10, “Advertising and Consumerism,” with new readings and all new sample ads for students to analyze.
