Submission Guidelines

The essay must be no more than 1,500 words in length, and in response to one of the topics from the designated list.

This brief booklet of student models includes two essays from each of the nine modes. It also includes an essay that showcases the writing process from beginning to end, crystallizing the importance of revision for all writers.   This is a collection of award winning student essays drawn from submissions to Pearson/Longman’s WRITING REWARDS Student Essay Contest.

Eligibility

The contest is open to all students enrolled in a pre-composition writing course at the time of submission.

Deadline

Submissions must be postmarked or e-mailed by May 31, 2009.

Judging Criteria

The winners will be determined by four of Pearson's authors: Lynne Gaetz, Suneeti Phadke, D.J. Henry, and Marcie Sims. The essays will be judged on the following criteria:

How well the essay addresses the question or topic (opinion and subjectivity will not factor into decision)

How clearly the thesis is presented

How well the piece is organized

How specific is the support for the thesis

How relevant is the analysis of support

Writing correctness (spelling, punctuation, grammar)
