Chemistry, 3/e
and Principles of Chemistry, 3/e

Making chemistry relevant

Author Niva Tro draws from his classroom experience as an award-winning instructor to approach the world of chemistry, helping students understand and see how chemistry is manifested in their daily lives. He consistently captures students' attention with relevant applications, his unique problem-solving approach, integrated macroscopic, molecular, and symbolic representations, and an engaging writing style. Tro's textbooks and the technology assets of MasteringChemistry are designed to work in tandem, to create a seamless learning suite to supporting student learning before, during and after class.

A consistent
problem-solving strategy

Dr. Tro incorporates his consistent approach to problem solving throughout his textbooks, helping students understand the logic and purpose of each step in the problem-solving process. The step-by-step framework encourages thinking logically through the problem-solving process rather than simply memorizing formulas.

Two- and three-column example formats help students to understand the logic and purpose of each step in the problem-solving process as well as the details of its implementation. Tro's procedure maps not only work out a problem for students, but in many cases also apply the same methodology to another problem side-by-side.

Relevant stories and examples

Dr. Tro opens each chapter by giving a specific example of the concept to grab students' attention, stepping back to make a more general and relatable analogy, and then going back into specifics. This style is reinforced by both his own classroom experiences and other successful science writers.

Revolutionary art

Multipart images include macroscopic, molecular, and symbolic perspectives that are fundamental to visualizing and understanding chemistry. Tro's multipart images connect students to what they see and experience (the macroscopic world) with the molecules responsible for that world (molecular) and with the way chemists represent those molecules (symbolic).

Many illustrations have three parts: what you can see with your eyes (macroscopic) what the molecules are doing molecular) and how chemists represent the process with equations (symbolic).

Conceptual learning

Conceptual understanding is emphasized through the opening section of each chapter, which introduces many of its main themes through a compelling situation or example of real-world importance. Each chapter also includes several Conceptual Connections, in which students are asked to think about concepts and solve problems without doing any math.

Conceptual Connections are strategically placed throughout the book chapters to reinforce conceptual understanding of the most complex concepts. Each chapter includes several Conceptual Connections, in which students are asked to think about concepts and solve problems without doing any math.

NEW! Approximately 50 Conceptual Connections have been added, including many that involve visualization and drawing.

MasteringChemistry® from Pearson is an online homework, tutorial, and assessment product designed to improve results by helping students quickly master concepts, and by providing educators with a robust set of tools for easily gauging and addressing the performance of individuals and classrooms.
